In 1973, Lorie Brooks was 21 and studying in Paris. Lorie was the
aggressive daughter of Stuart Brooks, publisher of the Chronicle. She knew one day she'd
be famous.
Stuart first bumped in Brad Eliot at Pierre's Restaurant and offered him a job at the
paper on the spot. At first Brad just did weddings and obituaries, but by the end of the
week he was doing small stories. He also watched the wire at night and saw a news report
come in on the wire.
DR. BRAD ELIOT OF CHICAGO HAS BEEN KILLED IN AN AUTO CRASH.
Brad realized the man who had stolen his car and identification papers as he was leaving
Chicago had been killed in a crash in that car. He learned that Barbara, his fiancée, had
identified him by his ring and tie clasp. It doesn't matter anyway, he thought. Barbara is
probably happy that I'm dead after what I did. Here was the perfect way to "die"
and start his life all over!
Stuart, the husband of Jennifer Brooks, had four exceptionally attractive daughters:
Leslie, Lauralee, Chris, and Peggy. Leslie was the oldest, and a pianist. The second
oldest, Lorie, was in Paris studying art. Chris was in college and Peggy, the youngest,
was in high school. One day Stuart invited Brad over to his house to introduce him to his
family. It was odd because Brad insisted on keeping his background a mystery, which should
have put Stuart on notice. But Brad had a mysterious, unexplainable effect on most people.
He instilled trust, and he was always eager to help others.
Leslie Brooks was shy and socially backward when she first met Brad. She spent all of her
free hours practicing the piano and dreaming of a career as a concert pianist. She had
never dated and felt completely ill at ease around men. Brad realized at once what Stuart
was trying to do, to set him up with Leslie. But Brad was not sure he was interested in
any woman at that time, not after what had happened to him in Chicago. But it was the
least he could do for the man who practically saved his life.
That night Brad paid special attention to Leslie and convinced her to play Mozart for him.
Chris and Peggy had a great time talking and joking with Brad after dinner, and Stuart and
Jennifer really liked the young man. Brad convinced Leslie to walk him to his car and told
her they were going on a date in a few days whether she liked it or not.
After their date, Brad convinced Leslie to play the piano for him again. This time she
came out of her shell. When Brad kissed her, Leslie began to feel desires she only felt
for her music and her shyness around Brad slowly gave way to passion. It wasn't long
before she began to fall in love. The first love of her life.
In 1974, Brad had sex with Sally McGuire who had seduced Snapper Foster because Leslie
Brooks, had developed a sexual hang-up and couldn't to sleep with him. Sally wanted
Snapper's baby.
When Sally found out about Snapper's engagement to Chris, the pregnant Sally had no one to
turn to and tried to kill herself. After Brad Eliot saved her life, she told Pierre
Roulland, the owner of the club where she worked, that she was pregnant. Pierre was in
love with her and asked her to marry him and told her that no one else needed to know that
the child wasn't his. Sally declined his offer. She still had hopes of marrying Snapper
and wanted to tell Snapper she was pregnant, in hopes of breaking his engagement to Chris.
Liz Foster, Snapper's mother, found out instead. She tried to help Sally, counseled her,
and Sally finally decided to marry Pierre Roulland instead, the kind owner of the
restaurant and Sally's employer. Pierre wanted to give her child a name. She declined at
first, then went through with the marriage to Pierre.
A few days before Chris and Snapper were to be wed, and after Sally had already eloped
with Pierre, Snapper overheard a conversation between his mother and Sally and learned he
was the father of Sally's baby.
By 1975 Leslie's concert career was going great and she secretly dreamed of a life with
Brad. But Lorie was determined to make sure it didn't happen. Leslie wrote Brad a letter
begging him to join her in Detroit for her big concert. Lorie made sure Brad never
received the love letter. On the opening night, Leslie called Brad to find out why he
hadn't come to see her, and instead Lorie answered his phone. Not letting Leslie know that
Brad was only helping her with a book she was writing, Lorie led Leslie to believe that
Brad wanted to spend the night with her instead. Lorie then seduced Brad herself, and
proposed marriage. Believing Leslie no longer needed him, Brad accepted. Leslie began
showing signs of depression, and had a mental breakdown. She ended up in New York
wandering around Central Park. All Leslie's identification was stolen, so she was admitted
to a New York hospital as a Jane Doe.
When Sally gave birth to little Charles Pierre. Chris was led to believe that the baby was
premature. Concerned because the child was ill, Chris called the hospital to find out how
he was and learned that the baby had been full term. Confused, and then putting the pieces
together, Chris realized the child must have been fathered by Snapper. Snapper confessed
to Chris that he was the boy's father. Stunned, Chris fell and had a miscarriage. To find
herself once again, she separated from Snapper and took a job as a social worker in Legal
Aid for brother in law Greg Foster.
Meanwhile, Sally began a new life for herself and her baby in Chicago. After a time, Chris
gained new independence, and she and Snapper resumed their marriage.
In 1976 the Brooks family was upset that Lorie was missing. But Lorie was in seventh
heaven since Brad had asked her to marry him. It wasn't until a doctor at the sanitarium
saw an old newspaper with her picture in it that he believed was his Jane Doe. He called
Stuart who immediately went to see if indeed his daughter had been found.
When Leslie's identity was discovered, Brad learned the truth of what Laurie had done and
broke their engagement. Leslie, with Brad's help, had a complete recovery, and they
planned to marry. Meanwhile, Leslie bought Pierre Roulland's nightclub from his widow,
Sally, and renamed it the Allegro, and Leslie began singing there.
Brad told Leslie the truth of his past, how he had been a Chicago neurosurgeon who had an
affair with a nurse named Barbara Anderson. Barbara had had his son, who eventually died
while Brad was operating. This caused Brad so much guilt that he left Chicago and gave up
medicine. Leslie said that she would keep his story a secret, and they got married.
Lorie, after a romance with a married man named Jed Andrews, fell in love with Bruce
Henderson's son, Mark Henderson. Mark was the one man who allowed her to abandon her
shell. When Lorie and Mark announced their engagement Lorie's mother announced that Bruce,
not Stuart, was her father. Lorie and Mark were half brother and half sister! When Mark
heard the truth he left town. Lorie vowed never to trust a man again.
Lorie learned from Stuart that Mark was working at a clinic in Cleveland and went to see
him. Mark was surprised she knew they are brother and sister but Lorie didn't care. She
insisted they could get married anyway as long as they had no children.
Lorie received a copy of her new book, published under a pseudonym, entitled "In My
Sister's Shadow". By now, Lorie had become interested in Lance Prentiss but knew very
little about him. Brad was losing his sight.
Fearful he would be a burden to Leslie, Brad deliberately began neglecting her so that she
would fall out of love with him. With his eyesight nearly gone, Brad left Leslie and moved
in with Lorie. Doctors found a cure for Brad's blindness. But by that time, irreparable
damage had been done to Brad and Leslie's marriage. They divorced and Brad left town.
Lance Prentiss found a summer home for his mother, Vanessa, in Genoa City. Vanessa wore a
veil over part of her face, supposedly to cover a horrific scar that she had received
while rescuing Lance from a fire five years earlier. Embarrassed by her condition, Vanessa
never ventured into public. When Lance found himself intrigued by Leslie Brooks, Vanessa
feared that she would lose her son to another woman.
After Leslie's divorce from Brad, she fell into a deep depression. Leslie continued to
perform piano concerts and was surprised that a wealthy admirer, Lance Prentiss, followed
her from town to town, faithfully attending every concert. Lance revealed to Leslie that
he loved her. In a desperate attempt to forget Brad, Leslie had an affair with Lance. But
when she realized that her heart still belonged to Brad, Leslie broke off the affair.
Lance fell for Lorie, who was still nursing a broken heart after her break-up with Mark.
After being romanced by Lance, Lorie gave into his charms but was confused by Lance's
mysterious behavior whenever she visited his home. He specifically forbade her from
entering one particular room in the house. She also couldn't understand why she was
constantly running across scarves monogrammed with the initial "V."
Vanessa was not pleased by Lance's involvement with Lorie and quickly developed a strong
dislike for both Lorie and Leslie, both of whom she continued to view as a potential
threat.
It was 1978 when newlyweds Lance and Lorie found themselves saddled with a major problem.
Surprisingly, it wasn't Vanessa and her jealous feelings towards Lorie. Instead, it was
Lance's wayward brother, Lucas, who had a talent for stirring up trouble and an eye for
the ladies. He showed up unannounced on their doorstep one day and immediately began
creating havoc.
Meanwhile, Lorie attempted to build a relationship with Vanessa and even suggested that
she have facial surgery for her burns. Vanessa, however, wasn't interested in accepting
Lorie as her daughter in-law, despite Lorie's interest in correcting her disfigurement.
When Vanessa discovered that Lorie's new novel, "In my Sister's Shadow,"
chronicled her sister Leslie's nervous breakdown, she seized upon the opportunity to
undermine Lorie.
While Lorie was promoting her book, word leaked out, thanks to Vanessa, that it was
actually an autobiographical account of her troubled relationship with her sister, Leslie.
Soon after, Leslie, who was on a grueling concert tour, found herself hounded by reporters
anxiously seeking tawdry details about her nervous breakdown. Leslie became so upset at
being hurled into the frenzied media's harsh spotlight that she nearly suffered a second
breakdown.
When Lance heard what Lorie had done, he lashed out at her and then flew to meet Leslie
and lend her emotional support. Leslie's family was also concerned for her well being.
Leslie decided to cancel her tour, but with Lance's support, she slowly regained her
confidence and resumed performing.
One evening, after a successful performance, Lance and Leslie returned to her hotel suite,
where they ended up making love. The following morning, Leslie felt so guilty about their
one night encounter that she encouraged Lance to patch things up with Lorie. Soon after,
Leslie discovered their night of lovemaking had left her pregnant. Rather than risk
destroying Lance and Lorie's marriage, Leslie didn't tell Lance that she was pregnant with
his baby. Lucas, who had fallen in love with Leslie, because of her kind nature,
sympathized with the position she was in and proposed marriage. Leslie appreciated Lucas's
concern for her and gradually developed feelings for him. She accepted his proposal and
they married.
1980 - Enter Victor Newman!
Victor Newman, sensing a closeness between Julia and Brock Reynolds that went beyond
friendship, became jealous. Julia agreed to stay with Victor, provided he commit
completely to their marriage. But Victor was convinced that Julia and Brock Chancellor
were lovers, and Victor turned to Lorie Brooks for attention.
Note: the history files interchange the name Chancellor and
Reynolds for Brock.
Victor provided Julia with a gun for protection when a robber attacked her. Meanwhile,
Brock caught Victor and Lorie kissing, and resumed his romance with Julia. Julia told
Victor that she wanted to have a baby. But behind Julia's back, Victor had a vasectomy.
Julia also began modeling at Michael Scott's studio, which was partly owned by Victor.
Brock left town because of Julia's inability to end her marriage to Victor. While Victor
was out of town, his former secretary, Eve Howard, suddenly surfaced. Julia had hostile
feelings for Eve, who had had a one-night stand with Victor. Feeling vulnerable and
confused by Eve's presence, Julia slept with Michael. Julia was immediately overwhelmed
with grief. Her friendship with Brock had remained strictly platonic. But now that she had
slept with Michael, Julia had actually cheated on Victor for the first time in their
marriage. When Julia accepted a modeling assignment for Jabot, with Michael as the
photographer, Victor suspected that they were lovers.
With trouble brewing in Lance and Lorie's marriage, Lance began an affair with Monique but
eventually sent her back to Paris and set his sights on wining back Lorie.
Lucas Prentiss told Lorie that Leslie had developed amnesia she visited Leslie who didn't
recognize her and didn't reveal to Leslie that they were sisters. Leslie didn't understand
how Lance could be the father of her son. Lorie worried that Leslie would regain her
memory and demand custody of her son, Brooks. Meanwhile, Vanessa Prentiss became Leslie's
ally because she knew that losing Brooks would destroy Lorie. But Leslie surprised Lorie
when she awarded full custody of Brooks to her and Lance. Leslie explained she couldn't be
a proper mother to a child she hardly remembered. Soon after, Leslie resumed her piano
career and resolved to stay in Genoa City and regain her memory. Leslie agreed to take a
cruise with Lucas, which bothered Lorie. She fretted that, if Leslie and Lucas resumed
their marriage, they might seek custody of Brooks.
After Julia Newman became pregnant, Victor began taping his wife's conversations with her
lover, Michael Scott. When Victor's suspicion that Julia and Michael were lovers was
confirmed, he trapped Michael in a bomb shelter in the basement of his ranch home. While
Michael was being held prisoner, Victor had a monitor installed. Seeing Victor and Julia
together in their home on the monitor added to Michael's torture. Eventually, Julia
discovered that Michael was being held hostage. She tried to free him. When Victor
intervened, they had a struggle and Julia tumbled down a flight of stairs. She was rushed
to the hospital, where she miscarried. Meanwhile, Victor discovered that he had actually
fathered Julia's baby. Soon after, Julia and Michael left town.
In 1991, Leslie reconciled with Lucas, but she had a difficult time making love with him.
Lorie, who was worried about the reconciliation, had an affair with Lucas so that Leslie
wouldn't seek custody of her son. After tripping over one of Brooks' toys, Leslie regained
her memory and recalled that Lance was the father of her son. Leslie also sold her stock
in Prentiss Industries to Victor Newman.
Vanessa learned that she was dying from a terminal illness and utilized her last months to
mastermind a vicious plot against Lorie. Meanwhile, Vanessa was disappointed when her son,
Lucas, announced that he was leaving town because Leslie wasn't in love with him.
In was 1982 when Lorie hired Robert Laurence to be her attorney and he waged a fierce
battle to clear her of killing Vanessa. The tension created by the trial slowly caused
Lorie and Lance's romance to erode. Eventually, Vanessa's diary turned up, which contained
information about her plan to frame Lorie. Although Lorie regained her freedom, she lost
Lance, who decided to rebuild his life away from Genoa City. Lori's other sister, Chris,
packed her bags, too, when her husband, Snapper, accepted a doctor's position at a
hospital in another state.
Soon after her trial, Lorie began seeing Victor Newman, which troubled Nikki Reed who felt
inferior around the sophisticated and poised best-selling novelist. Even though Nikki was
wildly attracted to Victor, he made it clear that their relationship was strictly
platonic. Nikki, however, believed otherwise, even after Victor and Lori became
romantically involved. When Victor proposed marriage to Lorie, she accepted. Before the
ceremony, Victor handed Lorie a document that gave her control of Prentiss Industries.
Shortly before the wedding ceremony, Victor searched for Lorie, who had suddenly
disappeared. Instead, he found a letter from Lorie, informing him that she wasn't
interested in marrying him. Left behind with the letter was Victor's engagement ring.
Lorie packed her bags and arranged a meeting with Lucas before leaving town. To Lucas's s
surprise, Lorie announced that she had won control of Prentiss Industries from Victor and
was returning the company to Lance.
With Lorie out of the picture, Nikki's hopes of becoming involved with Victor were
revived. Victor tried to discourage Nikki's attraction by arranging for her to date
someone closer to her own age, a young man named Kevin Bancroft. Nikki reluctantly agreed
to see Kevin, but her feelings for Victor continued. Victor and Nikki eventually gave in
to their mutual attraction and slept together. But afterward, Victor insisted that it
wouldn't happen again.
As 1983 started
, Lori Brooks, her family and the Prentiss family had faded into the
sunset with the focus shifting to a rock singer named Danny Romalotti and a private
detective named Paul Williams.
