Lilly Belle Johnson and Walter Barber had two children.

Drucilla Barber Winters
Olivia Barber Hastings Winters

Neil Winters (parents unknown) married Dru but they got divorced when Neil wanted Dru to stay home barefoot and pregnant. They had a child (Lily Amanda Winters) whose paternity is uncertain. Dru left town to pursue a modeling career in Paris but recently returned to pick up where she left off with Neil. Neil still has feelings for Olivia but they remain in the closet.

Nathan "Kong" Hastings (Deceased) married Olivia and they had one child. (Nathan "Nate" Oliver Hastings Jr.) Nathan cheated on Olivia with Keesha Monroe. When Olivia found out she kicked him to the curb. In retaliation, Nathan abducted little Nate for a few days but in the end decided to give it all up. On his way home to Olivia, Nathan was hit by a slow moving car and died instantly.

Olivia was told to have herself and little Nate checked for AIDS every six months but she only did this once.

Keesha Monroe (Deceased) got AIDS from a man named Stan (Deceased). Malcolm Winters married Keesha so she could die in peace.

Malcolm Winters married Olivia but they are now divorced.

Mamie Johnson is Lillie Belle's sister. She met Trent Jordan after Jill Abbott gave her a million dollars to leave town but returned recently minus Jordon.

King Kong!
When Nathan Hastings first arrived in Genoa City he was known as "Kong", the right-hand man to "Mr. Anthony", the latest in a series of crime bosses who ran the gambling and prostitution rings in Genoa city.

Anthony was under investigation by the D.A.'s office, but they couldn't get anything that would stick as evidence. That is, until Assistant D.A. Tyrone Jackson (whose brother, Elwood, AKA Jazz, worked for Detective Clueless and his partner, Andy Richards), decided to go undercover in Anthony's organization.

Using a lot of makeup, Tyrone (an African-American) went undercover in Anthony's organization as a white man named Robert Tyrone. Mr. Anthony tried to set Tyrone up romantically with his daughter, Alana, which put a strain on Tyrone's romance with Clueless' previous secretary, Amy Lewis.

One night, as Amy was heading home, she was followed by some sleazy types (The Clueless Detective Agency was in a really lousy neighborhood, before it moved into Newman Towers), and she was saved by a stranger who came out of nowhere - Kong.

To reward Kong for saving her from the creeps, Amy took him out to dinner and learned his name was really Nathan and discovered he couldn't read when he didn't know what was on the menu.

Amy began to teach him to read and with her relationship with Tyrone on the rocks because of his undercover work and his impending marriage to Alana (set up by Mr. Anthony), Amy found herself falling in love with Nathan.

As soon as Tyrone learned about this, he tried to set Amy straight by telling her what her savior did for a living, but it wasn't enough to turn off her feelings for him.

In showing Nathan just how much he had accomplished in learning to read, Amy convinced him he could be more than a mob enforcer. Because of all Amy had done for him, Kong decided to turn on Mr. Anthony - in fact, he saved Andy and Jazz's lives when Mr. Anthony was about to kill them by trapping them in a gas-filled room.

Mr. Anthony wound up dead trying to save his own butt, leaving Kong with the chance to start fresh. Realizing someone with Kong's street smarts and connections could be of use in handling rough spots and getting information from non-traditional sources, Detective Clueless and Andy hired him to work for them.

One day Jazz disappeared giving Kong a chance to take his place as a combination bodyguard/street source for Paul and Andy.

Andy eventually left Genoa City and his life there behind when he and his wife, Faren, moved to Pittsburgh. Nathan started doing more for Paul, especially after the Clueless Detective and Alarm Company moved into Newman Towers, hired Yes-Boss (Lynne Basset) and started installing alarms systems on the side.

Later, but before George Rawlins' death, Nathan left town. Upon his return he learned of Paul's "death" (really a setup by Paul, his dad, and Victor) to help Yes-Boss run the Agency, and ultimately found out that George's killer, Adrian Hunter, was a hit man.

After being one of a whole group of people that finally caught Hunter, Nathan came back to work for Paul full time. It was shortly after that when he met Dru Barber (who picked his pocket) and ended up teaching her how to read and write, just as Amy had done for him years before. Since that time, Nathan managed to stay clear of his criminal past. However, the memory of his past life remains fresh in the minds of the Genoa City Police Department.

Attempts to reach Police Commander Frank Lewis (Amy's father) and Lt. Carl Williams (Clueless' father), both of whom were familiar with Kong and his origins, were unsuccessful.

Even so, there is still evidence of his past which leaves many Genoa City residents wondering why the cops let Hastings go free so easily after his detainment for breaking into his wife's apartment.

After borrowing money from Detective Clueless with a promise to leave Genoa City, Hastings returned seeking visitation rights with his son, Nate Jr. Hastings and Dr. Olivia Winters had broken up after Nathan was busted for sleeping with Keesha Monroe - a woman who later died from AIDS.

"Where has Nathan been sleeping? On a park bench? Look at him! He's dirty and smells. I don't want him near my son and will do whatever it takes to keep him away" Dr. Olivia Hastings said at the time.

Hastings ended up kidnapping his own child but eventually decided to give up the battle. As he was returning little Nate to his mother, the kid ran across the street. In pursuit, Nathan ran into the street, was hit by a car, and died.

Another perspective

It was 1990 when Drucilla Barber blew into Genoa City and wasted no time picking the pocket of private detective, Nathan Hastings. Since Hastings worked for the Paul Williams Detective & Alarm Company at the time, Hastings' wallet was empty. Having run away from home seven years earlier and run up a long police record, Barber looked up her long-lost Aunt Mamie Johnson who was the Abbott maid at the time.

Johnson convinced John Abbott to let Barber stay in a spare room off the kitchen. A few days later, Barber was caught shoplifting at Fenmore's Department Store. Interested in the little thief, Hastings discovered that Barber couldn't read or write and got the court to release her into his custody. Now living at his apartment, Hastings taught Barber how to read and write but she wasn't happy being enclosed in such a tiny cubicle. But, she decided to tough it out when she found herself attracted to the man.

At the same time, Barber's sister, Olivia, just happened to be in Genoa City for a medical internship and was romantically involved with Hastings. Dru knew the two planned to get married but that didn't stop her from trying to get into Hastings' pants. She tried everything but nothing seemed to work.

Then, Dru realized she had the ability to dance. Yeah, she would dance her way into Hastings' heart. Convinced, Dru got Mamie to give her money for dance lessons and John Abbott gave her a part-time job in the Jabot mailroom.

Two flies got stuck in the ointment when Dru and Olivia's parents arrived in town. Gosh, it was like a family reunion! Dru put a damper on things when she told her parents she didn't want them in her life. Saddened, the elder Barbers left town.

When 1991 rolled around, Dru was still trying to snag Hastings. When she told her sister about the hunk, Olivia wanted to meet him. Dru was frantic when she just happened to bump into Neil Winters who agreed to help Dru play a game.

As it turned out, Neil fell in love with Olivia. Knowing by now what Dru was up to, Olivia moved her wedding date up. Disaster struck when the sisters father took ill. After the scare, Olivia and Nathan were married. Soon after, Neil and Dru fell in love and Dru became interested in a modeling career.

The following year, Dru, seeing fame and fortune, signed up with photographer Vinne Russo. Fortunately, Paul Williams and Nathan Hastings exposed Russo's pornography business before Dru got in too deep.

It was 1992 when Dru Winters met Fashion photographer Blade Bladeson, and turned down "the opportunity of a lifetime" dancing the lead in 'Giselle' to become a sanctioned model. Dru and Blade both jumped on job offers at Jabot Cosmetics. Blade was attracted to Ashley Abbott as much as he was the job, while Jill Abbott wasn't sure that Dru was right for Jabot.

Dru also signed a centerfold deal with 'Sensuality' magazine. When Jill, on hand to oversee Blade's shoot for the magazine, discovered Dru was the subject, she destroyed the film. Neil Winters, unaware of Dru's transgression, gave Dru an engagement ring. Dru's joy was short-lived, however, when her centerfold hit the newsstands. The magazine had published her test shots! Devastated, Dru returned the ring and left town.

Meanwhile, Olivia's happiness over her pregnancy was cut short when word came down that she was suffering from a severe medical condition. Vowing to see the pregnancy through because her doctors said it might he her only chance to conceive, she kept the news to herself. Eventually Mamie Johnson found out, as did Nathan Hastings. Neil and Nathan found Dru and brought her back home before she got into too much trouble again with the wrong crowd. The stress Dru was causing Olivia became too much and Olivia was taken to the hospital.

Rushing to Olivia's side, their mother, Lillie Belle, made it clear that her eldest was still the favored daughter. The doctors induced labor in an effort to save Olivia's baby. After the crisis, Olivia and Nathan named him Nate.

Dru, hoping to turn her life in a more positive direction, resumed her ballet lessons. By the end of the year, Olivia convinced Neil to give Dru a second chance.

In 1993, Dru and Neil tied the knot at the Chancellor estate. Later, Dru learned the truth regarding the animosity she always felt from her mother. Seems daddy Walter Barber had come home drunk one night and forced himself (a scary thought if you had ever seen Lillie) on Lillie Belle when she had told him she didn't want another child. Despite her mother's explanation for hurting Dru, Olivia ordered Lillie out their lives.

Later, Olivia changed her mind and brought a despondent Lillie back to Genoa City where she could take care of her. Soon, Lillie's manipulations drove a wedge between Olivia and Nathan, and Dru was once again hurt when her mother rebuffed Dru and Neil's invitation to stay with them instead of Olivia and Nathan. Dru had wanted her sister and brother-in-law to be given the time and space they needed to repair the damage Lillie had caused to their marriage, but Dru also wanted to bond with her mother.

As 1994 rolled around, Dru knew from firsthand experience the pain caused by estrangements within a family, Dru encouraged Neil to accept his half brother Malcolm, whom he hadn't seen in years. Neil's first impression was that Malcolm wanted to freeload, but when Malcolm landed a job at Blade's photo studio, their relationship took a new turn.

While Neil was away on a business trip,. Dru, under the weather, overmedicated, and somewhat delirious made love to Malcolm by mistake. Afterwards, Neil expressed his desire to start a family, and Dru would soon find herself expecting. But who was the father? When Malcolm admitted to Dru that it was he who had responded to Dru's advances and made love to her that night, Dru considered terminating her pregnancy. But at the same time, Dru learned that she suffered from a medical condition that might prevent her from conceiving again. Then, after seeing the joy of Neil got from playing with little Nate, Dru knew she couldn't deprive him of fatherhood. So she put it out of her mind, and with Malcolm's concurrence, the pair decided to keep their rendezvous a secret forever.

Meanwhile, Olivia tried to set Malcolm up with Stephanie, a medical student, but little came of the relationship. Malcolm continued to hang out with his brother and his sister-in-law.

In 1995, Nathan found himself deeply involved in a messy affair with Keesha Monroe. Olivia became suspicious when he came home with lipstick on his collar, and rejected her advances in the bedroom. Neil encountered his brother-in-law in a restaurant having an intimate chat with this woman too a told Nathan to shape up, Nathan said that at least Keesha had time for him, whereas his workaholic wife spent too many hours at the hospital. Nathan did try to dump Keesha but he couldn't give her up or she wouldn't let him go. When Nathan would take Olivia out on a special! date, Keesha would pout and threaten to tell Olivia.

Keesha, using the name Nola, even checked out Olivia in her hospital office, posing as a new patient. She couldn't believe that Nathan would have such an attractive wife! Dru, who recently became a new mother, couldn't believe that Nathan would cheat on her sister, and she chewed him out, threatening to tell Olivia if he didn't put an end to the affair.

As if things weren't complicated enough, Malcolm met a forlorn Keesha at Gina's. He became so enamored with her that his enthusiasm actually had an effect on Keesha which drove Nathan into a fit of jealousy. Olivia wanted to give Nathan another baby, and so the couple, after being sexually void, began trying to conceive. Meantime, Keesha was falling for Malcolm and refusing to take phone calls from her ex-boyfriend, Stan Jackson. When Keesha told Malcolm the truth about her affair with Nathan, Malcolm was outraged and dumped her. When Keesha eventually tried to get in touch with Stan, she was learned he had died of AIDS! Shattered, she realized she might be infected, and that if she were, she may have infected Nathan, who had reconciled with Olivia.

In 1996, Olivia told Dru that Nathan was out of town on business so Dru decided to do a little checking. Paul Williams, Nathan's boss, told her he hadn't given Nathan any out of town assignment. Dru told Olivia that Nathan was cheating on her with Keesha Monroe! Olivia turned on Dru, demanding to know how long it had been going on and why she'd been kept in the dark.

When Nathan confessed, Olivia went on a rampage. She threw him out and ordered him to stay away from her and little Nate. Olivia took a pregnancy test and an AIDS test. She tested negative. Nathan said he would be tested, too, and later reported that he was negative. Then he remembered that he and Nate had a minor accident in the playground in which both of them had gotten cut. Olivia lost it! She prepared little Nate to be tested telling him he had to be a "brave little man" when the doctor would stick him with a needle.

Little Nate kept asking for his daddy, wondering where he was and when he was coming home. Nathan made attempts to see his boy, but Olivia kept putting roadblocks in the way. Meanwhile, Malcolm was walking a tightrope between Keesha and Olivia. He befriended Keesha, saying he knew about her condition, but wanted her to know he was on hand to help her through the rough days ahead. And he tried to distract Olivia by amusing her, taking her dancing, and entertaining little Nate.

When Nate's first test was negative, Olivia was relieved but Nathan was making a fuss about his legal rights. One day, Nathan picked the lock on Olivia's apartment door and waited for her and Nate to come home. Olivia freaked out. Nathan had long run out of money, so he asked Paul for his old job back. Paul checked with Olivia, who agreed that as long as he didn't cause any trouble, Nathan could go back to work.

Malcolm, meanwhile, was becoming more concerned over Keesha's bad health. She had developed pneumonia and death was imminent. Malcolm felt Keesha craved the nourishment of love for her spirit and her soul, so he asked her to marry him.

Nathan was becoming more desperate. He kidnapped Nate. Beaten, drained, and broke, he decided to return Nate to his mother. As they approached the apartment building, Nathan stopped to buy flowers. As Nathan's back was turned, Nate ran across the street. Nathan darted into the street to look for him, and was hit by a slow moving car. Olivia found Nate asleep at her door and took him to the hospital to see his dad.

After good-byes between father and son were said, Olivia thanked Nathan for returning Nate to her. Nathan asked her for forgiveness, then closed his eyes and died.

As the year came to an end, Dru signed a modeling contract with Kellum and Rogers against Neil's wishes. Keesha Monroe died.

In 1997, Neil was upset because Dru continued to accept modeling jobs that took her away from home for long periods. Neil found himself turning to Olivia for companionship and understanding. Finally, unable to deal with his wife's absences any longer, Neil phoned Sid Garber, Dru's agent, and made it appear that Dru was in agreement with his desire for her to scale down her assignments. When Dru learned what Neil had told Sid she chewed Neil out for interfering in her career.

Neil and Dru continued to disagree over Dru's commitment to her career, and in the wake of Sid's canceling one of Dru's contracts, Dru pleaded with Neil to reconsider. Later, when Dru was asked on a TV talk show to name the person she would give the most credit to for her successful modeling career, Dru replied that the credit would have to go to her understanding and supportive husband. Touched, Neil romanced Dru and told her he wanted them to have another baby!

Although Dru told Neil she was ready to have a another baby she secretly continued to take birth control pills.

In the meantime Malcolm and Olivia were getting closer. Little Nate was whining for Malcolm to become his daddy, and when Malcolm proposed to Olivia on bended knee, Nate was pleased. However, Neil's happiness was short-lived. After months of trying to conceive, he accidentally discovered birth control pills in Dru's purse. Furious, Neil moved out. Dru and Neil remained estranged as 1998  began. After months of soul-searching. Neil started to forgive Dru and both decided to give their marriage a second chance. It didn't work. They got divorced and Dru moved to Paris. During the interim, Neil fell for Victoria Newman but that relationship didn't work either.

Malcolm Winters gets a job!
June 1994. Neil Winters and Nathan Hastings were working out at the Jabot gym. "So how is your two member family?" Hastings asked. "You mean Drucilla and me?" Winters replied. As Hastings pretended to bench press, Winters took a sip from a designer water bottle and changed the subject to his half brother, Malcolm, who had recently delivered a letter to him. As they were leaving, Winters tossed the letter into the trash. Without being seen, Hastings fished it out and rubbed the ring in his ear as he skimmed the letter.

Moments later, Dru Winters appeared, discussed her husband's brother and then Hastings left without taking a shower. Dru called Malcolm, invited him to visit Neil and sure enough, Malcolm appeared moments later in Neil's office. "What do you do for a living?" Neil asked.

"I hang," Malcolm replied. Pressed for more, Malcolm revealed he did graduate from high school and flashed a class ring as proof. Later, Malcolm was in the park looking at old newspaper clippings he keeps in his wallet about his brother. As he fumbled the papers, Malcolm admired his ring. At that moment, a gang appeared seemingly out of nowhere and attacked him.

Winters was taken to the Center 4 Disease where he was treated by Dr. Olivia Winters. As the doctor patched him up, Malcolm tried hitting on her but she had no interest. A few days later Malcolm returned to have the stitches removed and amazingly, there was no scar!

As time crept along, Drucilla convinced photographer Blade Bladeson to hire Malcolm as an assistant. Before he was killed by a train, Bladeson amended his will leaving the photo studio to Winters, a man he hardly knew.

And the letter found in the trash? It was written by Malcolm to Neil outlining his plan to move to Genoa City and become famous like his big brother.

Monkey see, Monkey do
With Malcolm Winters banging the male hormone drums in front of Alex Perez, it's easy to see the photographer has picked up one of his brother's bad habits.

The story picks up in May of 1987. Neil Winters was acting like a real caveman. For months Winters had been spewing about the importance of family but thought nothing when he, married to Dru Winters at the time, swapped spit with his wife's sister. Dr. Olivia Winters told Mr. Winters to check his feelings for her but secretly wanted him in her bed.

Winters thought his marital problems were at an end when his wife returned from Tahiti and agreed not to take any more out of town photo shoots. Neil didn't want any woman of his working. In general, his theory was that women belong at home, in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.

Neil's happiness was short lived when he learned Dru had "betrayed" him by accepting an assignment in Paris. The couple squabbled about this for days.

When the dust settled, Dru realized Neil would be hell to live with if she took the job. She called her agent, Sid 'the hipster' Garber, to say she had changed her mind. Garber fully understood because only moments ago, Neil had called him to say he felt his woman's place was home with their baby. After being pestered to no end, Sid was about to let Dru out of her contract when Dru called to say she would do anything to keep working including a promise to make Neil stop calling Sid.

Sid changed his mind but because of the lateness, Dru would have to leave for Paris within a matter of hours. Dru was ready. She had passports for herself and her baby and even managed to get the required up-to-date immunizations.

When Neil returned home he thought Dru was all dressed up for a family outing but quickly discovered what was really going on. He went ballistic. "How dare you?" he bellowed.

Dru and the baby flew off to Paris and returned to Genoa City a few days later. Neil tried to be cool but he couldn't resist whining to Olivia that he had been betrayed and didn't know how long he could tolerate his wife doing with her career what she wanted. Neil was so freaked he felt ending his marriage was the only way out.

As it so happened, WYBO, a local TV station, arranged an interview with Dru. The crew arrived at the Winter's apartment and the reporter began acting more like a psychologist than an interviewer. "Tell me about that" and "how do you feel about that?" the reporter asked when Dru began discussing her past life as an uneducated street thief.

Lurking in the hallway, Neil heard Dru praise him for making all things possible but he didn't give a damn. He was being betrayed and he didn't like it. When the interview aired the following day, Jack Abbott and nearly the entire city stopped what they were doing to watch.

Neil claimed to be proud of his woman's interview but nothing had changed. Again, Neil turned to Olivia who could only squint her eyes and wish that Neil was her man.

In the end, Dru stood her ground and made a decision to divorce. While he claimed to love his daughter, Neil has only seen the child once in all these years.

Side note: Sid Garber was one of those men pushing fifty who are unable or unwilling to face up to the reality that they are no longer teenagers. To stay cool and hip, Garber wore his gray hair in a ponytail and was too lazy to shave his scraggy beard or lose the extra 100 pounds he carried on his belly.

Daddy & Son
2001

Tired of waiting around for a judge to grant visitation rights to the little boy he calls 'son', photographer Malcolm Winters may be on the verge of taking matters into his own hands.

Winters developed a strange infatuation to be with Nate Hastings last year following his divorce in 1999 from the boy's mother, Dr. Olivia Winters. The couple parted ways when the shutter bug fell in love with newcomer Callie Rogers. Employed as a song bird at Genoa City's infamous RoadKill Cafe, Rogers eventually gave in to Winter's pestering desire to marry her. Rogers forgot to tell Winters she was already married at the time to a Tony Soprano type in Detroit named Trey Stark.

Stark got wind of the affair, zipped into Genoa City and Winters wound up with a fat lip. The fight was witnessed by Nate Hastings who began having nightmares. When his mother found out Olivia blew a gasket and asked attorney Michael Baldwin to revoke Winter's visitation rights but later agreed to limited visitation.

Ms. Rogers confessed her dastardly deed and got kicked to the curb. Mr. Winters turned his attention to his former wife's sister, tracked her down in Paris and not long afterward had Dru Winters in bed. When Olivia found out she threatened to reduce the already tight visitation rights saying Malcolm is not a good role model for her son.

Things have gone down hill for Mr. Winters ever since. He has fallen in love with yet another newcomer and doesn't let the fact he knows very little about his women bother him. After a few dates, he asked attorney Alex Perez to marry him but she doesn't appear ready to settle down and has shown some interest in Malcolm's brother, Neil. Ironically, Neil Winters was once married to Dru Winters and her sister, Olivia, continues to harbor romantic feelings for Neil.

The tangled web the Winter's weave may now be spinning out of control. With the help of the Winter's girls aunt, Malcolm has been seeing Nate Hastings on the sly in public places frequented by the boy's mother. When Olivia Winters finds out it may be a cold day in hell before Malcolm sees the kid again. Devastated, Malcolm could become so desperate to see the boy he'd be willing to pull a Nathan Hastings.

In 1996, Dr. Olivia Hastings was treating Keesha Monroe for AIDS. Monroe said she contracted the virus from a former boyfriend. Doc Hastings discovered her husband, Nathan, had been having an affair and that Keesha was the other woman! Because she had been trying to get pregnant again, Dr. Hastings began to worry that she and her son had been exposed to HIV. The good doctor and her son were instructed to obtain HIV tests every six months but they didn't.

While this was going on, Malcolm Winters found out about Nathan and Keesha and ended his romance with Ms. Monroe. It may have been a blessing in disguise for Monroe because Winters had been encouraging her to take medication with alcohol. When Monroe developed full-blown AIDS, Winters granted her dying wish, to be married! After the wedding, Keesha died.

Outraged, Dr. Hastings forbade Nathan from seeing their son. To get even, Nathan kidnapped the boy. After weeks on the run, Nathan decided to return Little Nate to his mother. As they neared the apartment building, Nate wandered away when Nathan stopped to buy flowers. Spotting Nate in the street, Nathan rushed to get him and was hit by a slow moving car. At the hospital, Nathan gurgled out an apology to Olivia and then kicked the bucket.

The psychological suspense accelerated when Nate withdrew into a shell. For weeks he sputtered no man could ever take his daddy's place. The situation critical, Olivia repeatedly said she was going to get the boy professional help - she never did. She did however, move into detective Paul Williams old apartment hoping it would help her son forget.

And forget Nate did. When his mother announced she was getting married to Malcolm Winters and that he would be going with them to Hawaii, the boy's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. From that day forward, Nate has called Malcolm his "dad" and Malcolm has reciprocated by calling Nate "son." Originally Mr. Winters wanted to adopt the little tyke but never did.

8 years of Winters

Saturday, 01.05.02
Eight years of boredom
It was 1994 when Malcolm Winters blew into Genoa City and was almost immediately arrested for robbery when he fit the profile of a common thief. Some thought the arrest was for wearing a baseball cap backwards or for not paying his bill at the Center 4 Disease where he was treated for free by Dr. Olivia Winters. Charges were dropped when fingerprints on the wallet stolen from the victim didn't match.

Winters' half-brother, Neil became concerned when Dr. Winters agreed to dance with the new man on the block at a 4th of July pool party at the Abbott residence. When Malcolm began making comments about what a hot baby Dru Winters was the hair on Neil's neck stood up.

Dru was surprised to discover that Neil had a half-brother and Neil explained he had distanced himself from Malcolm because he was a known trouble-maker. The first day Malcolm arrived he informed Neil that he had reformed but Neil didn't believe him. Still, Dru made friends with Malcolm, which led Malcolm to believe that she was attracted to him.

Groggy from over-medicating on cold medicine her sister gave her without a prescription, Malcolm stopped by one day to check on her for Neil, who was away on business. Dru thought Malcolm was Neil and allowed him to have sex with her. At first, Malcolm thought that Dru recognized him and told Olivia what happened.

When Dru said was pregnant, Olivia was sure Malcolm was the father of her baby. Dru considered having an abortion, but when her doctor revealed that she wouldn't be able to have another pregnancy, changed her mind. Rather than learn the truth about the baby's paternity, Dru resolved to keep the incident secret from Neil, and assumed that he was the father.

Malcolm got a job at Blade Bladeson's photo studio working with Dru as the model. A few months later Dru gave birth to a baby girl, Lily.

Malcolm changed his focus to an attractive doctor named Stephanie, but her medical practice kept her too busy for a personal life.

Meantime, Olivia had found out that her husband was cheating on her with a woman named Keesha Monroe. Eventually, Nathan broke it off and Keesha began dating Malcolm.

Olivia began treating Keesha for AIDS and discovered that she was the woman Nathan had been having an affair with.

Olivia blew a gasket because she had been trying to get pregnant again and was worried Nathan might have exposed her and their son Nate to HIV.

When Malcolm found out he broke it off with Keesha but she soon developed full-blown AIDS. Realizing Keesha was near death, Malcolm made her dying wish, to be married, come true. After the ceremony, Keesha died. Bitter, Olivia made it difficult for Nathan to see Nate so Nathan kidnapped the boy and disappeared. After several weeks on the run, Nathan decided to return the kid. Just feet away from their front door, Nate wandered away and Nathan rushed out into the street to fetch him only to be fatally hit by a car.

At the hospital, Nathan to apologize to Olivia for hurting her and then died.

Dru was offered a modeling contract but Neil insisted she turn it down so she could focus on being a full-time mother and wife. Behind Neil's back, Dru signed the contract and began secretly accepting out-of-town modeling assignments. Malcolm agreed to keep the secret.

Neil found out and split up with Dru but later told her he wanted them to have another child. But behind Neil's back, Dru took birth control pills so that she could continue her modeling career. Neil flipped when he found out and left Dru.

While trying to help Olivia cope, Malcolm fell in love with her. They were married and even took Nate on their honeymoon. Later, Malcolm surprised Olivia by announcing his desire to adopt Nate.

But things changed with Callie Rogers, an old girlfriend of Malcolm's showed up. When Olivia found out about Callie, she feared Malcolm might still be interested in her. Malcolm said he wasn't but Olivia didn't know Malcolm as well as she thought. How could she? They had only known each other for a year. Gina Roma hired Callie to sing at her restaurant.

The stress of Callie's continued presence in Malcolm's life took its toll so Malcolm and Olivia agreed to divorce which led Malcolm to wonder if Neil and Olivia were having an affair. It didn't take long for Malcolm to propose to Callie and she accepted. But Callie forgot to tell Malcolm that she was already married to her former manager, Trey Stark.

Olivia came down with aplastic anemia. When she heard that Nate had witnessed an attack on Malcolm by Trey's goon, she revoked his visitation rights. Callie finally confessed that she was married and left town.

It was 2000 when Dru returned and Lily contracted chickenpox. Neil invited them to stay at his apartment and just when it looked as if they might reconcile, Dru returned to Paris. Malcolm chased after her and convinced her to return.

Olivia's health continued to decline so Dru volunteered to donate her bone marrow and gave Neil the green light to go after Olivia. Dru hooked up with Malcolm briefly before going back to Paris.

All better, Olivia got it into her head that Malcolm wasn't a good role model for Nate and threatened to reduce his visitation rights. A court battle resulted with Malcolm getting visitation rights.

In 2001, Neil thought he wanted Olivia but after just one night kicked her to the curb because he had become interested in a new attorney named Alex Perez. What Neil didn't know was that his brother was interested in her too. And so the story recycled with the brothers battling again over the same woman as 2002 began.

Empty souls
by Brent Kellogg

We have seen the soul of the Winters clan. It is empty.

Members of this family have been trapped on a merry-go-around for years. So desperate are they for a purpose in life some have come close to in-breeding.

Unable to grow, teenager Nate Hastings remains a 10-year-old in need of a role model. Men in his life who were once uncles have become step-daddies and step-daddies have become uncles. Hastings' biological father, a man he once vowed never to forget, has become a distant memory. His mother, once married to his uncle slept with his other uncle. His aunt, once married to his uncle, slept with his other uncle. His mother, shunned by both uncles, has resorted to a man outside the family for role model and spit swapping services.

The Winters clan is interchangeable.

Dru Winters, her modeling career washed up, has returned to Genoa City where she seems certain to reconcile with the man she dumped for being too controlling. Not so much for herself but for a teenaged daughter who she apparently cannot control even though all she has to do is take up with the man she met in Paris who seems perfectly able to control her daughter and who the daughter seems content with being around.

Made to feel guilty, 14-year-old Lily Winters is destined to reconcile with the father who has shown little interest in her from conception. Also feeling guilty, recovering drunk Neil Winters has suddenly developed an urge to bond with his estranged daughter thereby paving the way for his return to society as the perfect, reprogrammed man.

Concerned that her sister is falling for a white man, Dru Winters will discourage Olivia Winters from falling in love with Brad Carlton and the sister will repeatedly tell the lesser sibling to mind her own business.

The only thing missing so far is the return of the Winters women parents. But even Lilybell Winters can't stop the merry-go-around and nobody knows who the Winters men parents are or how they all came to have the same last name considering that the now presumed deceased Malcolm Winters was a half-brother.

Split apart and reunited again the partners choose sides only to find there is no place for them to go. And when they can't go they can't grow. Being unable to grow has resulted in mysterious medical afflictions but these ploys have been used so often they no longer elicit sympathy.

So what is left for this quivering mass of timid gelatin sitting around with its shoulders slumped and looking at their shoes, trying to remain viable and appropriately zealous as they toe the line?

The Winters clan has tried everything to get outside the box. But try as they might they cannot find an opening. When Nathan Hastings died the soul of this family was emptied.
