Tuesday, March 9, 2010 -- The donate project not going well, I'll keep the request going for another week before ending this page as there doesn't seem to be much interest in it anymore.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) is one of most common soy-based food "fillers" used to make literally thousands of processed food products. It's found in almost everything. Last week, one of the largest producers of HVP, Las Vegas-based Basic Food Flavors Inc., was the subject of an FDA consumer safety warning announcement. Salmonella had been found contaminating the company's HVP production and a nationwide recall went out for products from Trader Joe's, Safeway, McCormick and many other companies.

You should avoid all ingredients that contain the words "hydrolyzed" or "autolyzed."

HVP is also a potential source of hidden monosodium glutamate (MSG). HVP, TVP and yeast extract are common ingredients in the natural /vegetarian food industry. Even the big snack food companies get in on this act: A bag of "Natural Doritos" is made with yeast extract, too.

The FDA only considers HVP dangerous when it's possibly contaminated with salmonella. The FDA is so lame about the safety of food additive chemicals that it thinks aspartame and MSG are safe. It's bizarre: While tens of millions of Americans are poisoning themselves with diet sodas, the FDA goes crazy over a virtually minuscule risk of salmonella contamination in TVP which is usually cooked anyway (which destroys the salmonella).

An air traffic controller at JFK has been suspended after his young son was permitted to give radio instructions to pilots. This was followed by another ATC bringing his daughter into the tower the next night. The man's daughter communicated with pilots twice, and the boy made five transmissions to pilots preparing for departure.

"JetBlue 171 cleared for takeoff," the boy said in his first call. His father followed that up with a more detailed instruction for the aircraft then told pilots, "This is what you get, guys, when the kids are out of school."

In Missouri, how's this for teaching kids?

Organizers of the Missouri Deer Classic have seen attendance slip in recent years but might have found just what they needed to boost the popularity of the 22nd annual event this weekend at the Boone County Fairgrounds. The answer was a 1,400-pound grizzly bear.

Bear trainer/owner Jeff Watson of southern Indiana coaxed the bear to stand upright and display its teeth. As the bear returned to all fours, Watson rewarded him with some chicken, then hopped on his back and slid off just before the chicken was gone. There were audible gasps from the audience. What a thrill it must have been watching a captive bear.

Elsewhere at the fair, deer mounts were on display. Not just for men to get orgasmic over, women got in on the act too.

"We're trying to get more women involved in the outdoors,” said Jessica Alderson, 22, who added, "deer hunting is my absolute favorite" form of killing - defenseless against humans - animals.

Missouri Trappers Association member Clay McDaniel said participation by young people is “picking up" [...] "And now we’re starting to see more younger people [trapping and hunting] on their own."

People buying certain fish oil supplements to get the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids are ingesting chemicals banned in 1979, according to environmental advocates who have filed a lawsuit aimed at forcing manufacturers to warn consumers.

The lawsuit names five makers of supplements found to contain polychlorinated biphenyl compounds, drugstores CVS and Rite Aid, which sell those products, and Omega Protein Inc., of Houston, which touts itself as the world's largest producer of omega-3 fish oil.

Products to be wary of:

Nature Made cod liver oil and odorless fish oil.

Twinlab Norwegian cod liver oil and emulsified Norwegian cod liver oil.

Now Foods shark liver oil, double strength cod liver oil and salmon oil.

Solgar 100% pure Norwegian shark liver oil complex and Norwegian cod liver oil.

GNC liquid Norwegian cod liver oil.

Lab tests of these fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids found they contain some of the 209 polychlorinated biphenyl compounds known to cause cancer and birth defects.
