The Ladder of Death

by Michael Kelly
April 29, 2008

Jill became pregnant in 1984 not long after she and Jack made love in an abandoned cabin during a blizzard. Of course, it was also possible the child was John's. That's the part I'm certain of. I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that during a visit to her doctor, Jill and John learned the child she was carrying would be severely disabled either mentally or physically. They were both badly shaken by the news but while Jill wanted to abort, John was vehemently opposed to the idea.

I clearly remember the episode in which Jill fell off the ladder. Mamie had used the ladder to hang curtains and then left the living room. Right after that, Jill stared at the ladder with a weird, intense look on her face as menacing background music was heard. She quickly climbed to the top and then deliberately threw herself off. John was suspicious for a time that the fall had been intentional and was a little distant where his wife was concerned but naturally Jill swore it was an accident and he eventually got past his resentment.

It was very strange today to hear Jill express a vague sense of guilt over the long-ago loss of her child. Even more bizarre was Katherine saying that she told Jill long ago it wasn't her fault. I can't remember Katherine's take on the situation 20+ years ago but given their mutual loathing for one another at the time, I'm sure she would've assumed the worst.
