From
the moment Victor Newman's sperm was first stolen there has also been this nagging
question; who really stole it? In addition to the reaffirmation this week that she stole a
sample years ago, Diane Jenkins acknowledged that while she was Newman's wife she kept
some of his swimmers tucked away in the condo they shared. During the social intercourse
Jenkins says somebody helped themselves to a serving and she suspects that person was
Nikki Newman.
It was January, 2000, when Nikki called Robertson Sperm Lab to ask if it could store sperm
she was planning remove from the Newman apartment. Lab personnel said they'd be happy to
store it but cautioned that sperm is not something one swaps back and forth like borrowed
sugar. To avoid spoilage the lab preferred that it be allowed to transport the sperm, that
they would send a man over to fetch it and denied that they are known for allowing sperm
to slide in and out of their facility like a leaky condom.
Mrs. Newman made her way to the penthouse suite and was relieved to find the place devoid
of human life. Letting herself in, she tried figuring out where one might stash sperm when
she heard someone at the door. Slipping into the bedroom she watched as Jenkins removed
her coat, tossed mail on the table and was about to walk into the bedroom when the phone
rang. In an attempt to further conceal her presence, Nikki went into the closet where
Victor's vibes were overwhelming. Looking around, she spotted the cryogenic freezer
holding her husband's sperm. A cold chill ran down her spine. Listening through the door
Nikki could hear Diane on the phone and decided to make a break for the front door.
"Nikki! What the hell? How did you get in here?" Jenkins bellowed.
Newman explained that she had rung the bell and when the door wasn't opened she let
herself in. She was going to leave a note but since Jenkins was there she'd tell her in
person, "stay away from Victor!"
Jenkins fired back that the sperm donor had "reached out to me" and had
indicated he wanted to move back in with her. Nikki told Diane to stop dreaming and
quickly made her way out of the building.
It took a year to confirm that Mrs. Newman had switched the sperm that day.
Thinking
she had given birth to a baby sired by Victor's sperm Jenkins was sad when she read the
paternity test. Her child was not a Newman.
When
Nikki found out she rushed to tell Brad Carlton. Once in love with Nikki, Brad seemed
pleased. "That's great news for the Newmans," he said, adding he couldn't
imagine how such a thing [Jenkins' pregnancy] could have happened in the first place given
that most men in the city at the time hated Diane. The only way Brad saw Diane giving
birth was by immaculate conception. Still, Brad wondered how she could have gotten
anyone's sperm other than Victor's.
"It must have been a deliberate act. Who would hate Diane enough to do this to
her?" Carlton wondered.
The clue was resounding. Mrs. Newman has hated Jenkins since they day she and Victor were
married. In August of 1999, Mrs. Newman has hoped to have a baby with the old fart but
Victor had said in no uncertain terms he didn't want one.
In February, 2001, mere days after admitting she arranged to have the sperm switched which
resulted in another "unwanted' baby Nikki announced she would seek out the identity
of Christen Newman's biological father.
Outraged,
Victor Newman repeatedly told Nikki that she was responsible for allowing another baby
into the world who will grow up not knowing who its father is.
It
was March, 2001 when a tormented Nikki said she switched the sperm because she wanted to
prevent Jenkins from spawning a Newman baby thus trapping her former husband into a
relationship from hell.
December,
2001 - Nikki still has no idea whose sperm Jenkins used and has developed a guilt complex.
She's worried about Jenkins' son, too.
"Who knows what's happening to him. If I hadn't interfered by switching sperm samples
that innocent child wouldn't be in this fix. I feel responsible," she repeatedly
sputtered.
It was no accident that a year earlier Jack Abbott deposited a load of his sperm at the
local sperm bank which was stored at Robertson Labs.
"I did it because I really want a child one of these days. The right woman has to be
out there somewhere for me. With the cancer scare and all I figured it was the smart thing
to do," Abbott said when it was learned a lump had been found on one of his testicles
which was later medically declared benign.
After
some less than aggressive research Nikki concluded it would never be possible to know the
biological father of the Jenkins baby because she had checked with the unidentified man
who had helped her arrange the sperm switch and was told that the job had been farmed out
to Dennis Murphy who had died unexpectedly.
On a tip, Nikki and Jack raided the Murphy home. They trudged through piles of documents
in the basement and discovered a medical file with what were described as serial numbers
on it.
"If one [of the serial numbers] is Victor's, the other must be the father of Diane's
child," Nikki exclaimed without any idea that indeed, if the file had Victor Newman's
serial number on it, the other number would have to be Abbott's as the two sperm samples
were originally placed side by side at Robertson Labs and appeared that way on the
documentation.
One
the night they decided to break into the lab with a key Jack had mysteriously obtained he
made the mistake of leaving his cell phone on. "Honey, could you stop by the store
before you come home for some milk?" Mrs. Phyllis Summers inquired. Always the
obedient groom to be, Jack told Nikki she'd have to finish the caper by herself.
In
all the confusion, Jack forgot that his sperm was at the same lab.
And before she could say open sesame, a computer spit out more information than she had
ever wanted. Before her tired eyes, Nikki saw the name Jack Abbott and beside it a note
that his sperm had been given to a Mrs. Diane Newman in February, 2000.
While getting to this point has been a long, tedious and unbelievable journey, what very
few people remember is that while all the sperm switching was going on Brad Carlton was in
Newman's condo before Nikki made the switch and before Ashley Abbott got her grubby paws
on what she thought was Victor Newman's sperm.
There
is some confusion as to how Newman sperm originally got into the lab and speculation that
the sperm was of the diet kind in that it did not contain any active swimmers because
Victor had a vasectomy.
Imagine, if that's possible, some four years later. After all the fuss over who's sperm
created Ashley's baby it turns out to be none other than Brad Carlton.
If
Jack and Nikki could easily get into the lab who's to say Brad didn't too? Brad has always
been concerned that there be no more Newman kids. While he wasn't in Diane's apartment
very long, it could have been long enough for him to switch the sperm Ashley got with his
own.
