Remember When - 2004 Crime

The Lily Winters Connection

Originally published August 23, 2004

How life affirming and encouraging was it to stumble, quite randomly, across what is probably the strangest-looking, most suddenly-caring about what you drink, most quirky never seen before stranger who had no reason to be at the Victor Newman Memorial Center grand opening and not think it odd that said stranger was encouraging you to drink up?

How convoluted was it that Lily Winters did just this on Monday and soon was floating on air totally unaware that she had been drugged and happily trotted off with the stranger when she should have known better?

How bizarre was it that as crazy Kevin Fisher sounded the alarm Lily's goofy pals just gave him their blank, empty looks as if to say there's nothing wrong with Lily getting on an elevator with a stranger when they've repeatedly warned her to beware of odd balls?

And what was the point of the stranger barricading himself behind a locked door with Lily so that Kevin can bang on it and yell "open up" as he'll surely do before this lameness ends?

Kevin and his freaky pal Daniel Romalotti seem to think it'll make Kevin come off looking like the hero who saved Lily from a fate worse than death and thereby Kevin will be forgiven his past sins.

Because oh my God how easy is it, in the days of bogus alerts and lies about everything from war to gays and what it means to be a caring American, to pull one over, to give biased or tainted assistance to a damsel in distress, by default, selfish and self-serving and bitter. This, right now, if you bother to read the news or watch any of what's happening at the wreck center, seems to be the Genoa City way.

Remember that dramatic footage of Nick and Sharon Newman back at the Ponderosa after disposing of the evil Cameron Kirsten? See how they were praised and practically bestowed knighthood? Heroes they were. Mr. and Mrs. Spiderman. All criminal charges against Mrs. Newman dropped. Just like that. Commit a laundry list of crimes did you? Not a problem when you're rich and connected. In the end the really, really bad guy went down so it's okay, apparently, that the not so bad guy got away.

No wonder Kevin thinks he can pull off such a caper. Those who hate him and say he shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets will wipe the slate clean. They'll fall on their knees and praise the gods. Had it not be for Kevin what might have become of their precious Lily?

Sure they will.

As Kevin's brother told him last week, he has no friends. Nothing will change the minds of those who hate him. Kevin could run into a burning building to save these rich kid's pet snakes but it would not change anything. To them, Kevin is like a slow-moving colon disease. An Osama-like for which there is not about to be any dramatic victorious parade-in-the-street endpoint anytime soon.

Also at the grand opening on pins and needles was bitch-in-heat Lauren Fenmore wondering where or where was Kevin's brother? Didn't Michael Baldwin get her summons to appear? Didn't he know that Kevin was there and might be planning to blow himself up - or something? And what did Baldwin do when he finally arrived? Nothing, except to say that he's not his brother's keeper and for Fenmore to knock off the bogus terror warnings as he's got better things to do with duct tape than to wrap it around Kevin.

These are the things that make you wince and sigh and make you ask, damn, why am I paying any attention to this when from the outset I knew Romalotti's plan to make Fisher a hero would fail?

With summer at an end it can only be hoped that these chest-thumping suburban teenage warriors will all go back to school or at least conduct their stupidity out of public view. The collective populace at large is tired of these good upstanding Armageddon-fearing folk who've already had all of their basic needs so overstated and glutted that all that's really left is to try and pretend they're rugged renegade urban soldiers on bad ass recon missions and ooh aren't they just the coolest kids in the whole gated community?
