Remember When - 1973

General recap: Go to detailed summary

Dr. Brad Eliot, distraught because his biological son and the son of his fiancée Barbara Anderson died while he was operating on him, Brad walked away from his medical practice as a psychiatrist and neurosurgeon. Brad left Chicago and on the road to Genoa City his car and wallet were stolen. In a daze, he wandered into Genoa and after eating at Pierre's restaurant, admitted he couldn't pay.

Stuart Brooks, the owner/publisher of The Genoa City Chronicle, overheard Brad's conversation with waitress Sally McGuire. Like so many trusting souls in this city Stuart knew that Brad was no ordinary drifter and offered him a job. Spotting a news story declaring that Dr. Brad Eliot had been killed in a car accident, Brad decided to start his life over.

Stuart and his wife Jennifer had four daughters: Leslie, a shy pianist; Lauralee, "Lorie", a author; Chris, a journalist; and Peggy, a college student. At Stuart's urging, Brad started hitting on Leslie.

Leslie was so totally into her music she never dated. But there was something about Brad so she fell in love with him. He supported her career, it blossomed and for the first time in her life Leslie was happy.

Stuart was bummed when local medical student Snapper Foster (William Foster Jr.) took a liking to his other daughter, Chris. It wasn't so much Snapper's poor side of town roots than his indifference to Chris. (Snapper got his name because he was crabby and always snapping at people.

Snapper was putting himself through medical school after having been deserted seven years earlier by his father. The eldest of two sons, Snapper was also helping his mother Liz, a factory worker, put his brother Greg through law school and at the same time kept his eye on sister Jill who wanted to be a fashion model while working as a beautician. Snapper was also seeing Sally McGuire, the waitress at Pierre's.

When Stuart learned that Snapper was seeing Sally, he told Chris that Snapper was cheating on her. Chris moved out and went to work as a secretary for Greg Foster unaware that her father had financially helped his new law practice in return for her employment. When Chris found out, she quit. Greg was bummed because he had fallen in love with Chris.

At a local bar Chris met George Curtis who offered her a ride home where he raped her.

Jill didn't like working at the salon, but didn't want to go to college. She wormed her way into the life of a rich, powerful customer named Katherine Chancellor. An alcoholic, Katherine fired her personal secretary and gave Jill the opportunity of a lifetime by hiring her.

Detailed summary

Chicago psychiatrist-neurosurgeon Brad Eliot suddenly gave up medicine and left town, just minutes after the son of his fiancée died under his scalpel. He was torn by the idea that he had killed the boy. Upon leaving, his car and identification were stolen. Later he was picked up by a truck driver who had no luck in finding out who Brad was. He had no money, no personal possessions, and a huge gash on his forehead. The truck driver dropped him off at the end of the line, Genoa City, Wisconsin. Later on, after he wandered into Genoa City, no money, no identification, and wearing torn and dirty clothes, he went to Pierre's restaurant. He was hungry. He wolfed down a steak and then told the waitress Sally McGuire that he couldn't pay the check.

Meanwhile Stuart Brooks was meeting with Snapper Foster at the restaurant. Sally had kept a keen eye on the young medical student all through his lunch with Stuart. She knew who Stuart Brooks was, he was the father of Chris Brooks, that student from the University who had a crush on her boyfriend Snapper. Stuart just wanted to get to know the young man who had stole his daughter's heart. Snapper seemed to like Chris enough, but was somewhat indifferent towards her. This disturbed Stuart very much.

Stuart Brooks overheard the conversation between Brad and Sally, and liked the man he saw. Brad had remained calm and collective while he asked Sally to just put the dinner on his tab. Stuart paid for Brad's food, and gave him the address where he could pay him back. Later, Brad stopped by that address and learned it was the Genoa City Chronicle. Stuart was the publisher. Stuart showed Brad around the place and explained how things operated. There was just something about Brad, his intelligence, the way he carried himself. Stuart offered Brad a job at his newspaper, The Chronicle.

At first Brad just did weddings and obituaries, but by the end of the week he was doing small stories. He also watched the wire at night, and that is where he heard the news: Brad saw a news report come in on the wire.

DR BRAD ELIOT OF CHICAGO HAS BEEN KILLED IN AN AUTO CRASH.

Brad realized that the man who had stolen his car and identification papers as he was leaving Chicago had been killed in a crash in that car. He learned that his fiancée Barbara had identified him by his ring and tie clasp. It doesn't matter anyway, he thought. Barbara is probably happy that I'm dead after what I did. Here was the perfect way to "die" and start his life all over!

Stuart Brooks, was the husband of ravishingly beautiful Jennifer Brooks and the highly moralistic father of four exceptionally attractive daughters: Leslie, Lauralee, Chris, and Peggy. Leslie was the oldest, and a pianist. The second oldest, Lorie, was in Paris studying art. Chris was in college and Peggy, the youngest, was in high school. Later Stuart invited Brad over to his house to introduce him to his family. He introduced him to his oldest daughter, Leslie, an aspiring concert pianist. It was indeed a strange act of trust and intuition on the part of Stuart, for Brad insisted on keeping his background a mystery, which should have put Stuart off. But then, Brad had a mysterious, unexplainable effect on most people. He instilled trust, and he was always eager to help others.

Leslie Brooks was shy and socially backward when she first met Brad. She had spent so much time studying to be a concert pianist that she had completely neglected her social life. She spent all of her free hours practicing the piano, dreaming of a career as a concert pianist. She had never dated and felt completely ill at ease around men. Brad realized at once what Stuart was trying to do, to set him up with Leslie. But Brad was not sure he was interested in any woman at that time, not after what had happened to him in Chicago. But then it was the least he could do for the man who practically saved his life.

That evening Brad paid special attention to Leslie, though it pained her, she was so shy! He did convince her to play Mozart for him that evening, and she played it passionately. Chris and Peggy had a great time talking and joking with Brad after dinner, and Stuart and Jennifer really liked the young man. Later Brad convinced Leslie to walk him to his car, where he told her they were going on a date in a few days whether she liked it or not. After their date a few days later, Brad convinced Leslie to play the piano for him once more. She did so, and it was the only time she ever came out of her shell. Until Brad kissed her. Leslie began to feel desires she only felt for her music until that time and her shyness around Brad slowly gave way to passion for him. It wasn't long before she began to fall in love with the mysterious stranger, the first love of her 22 years.

Chris Brooks, Stuart's second-youngest daughter, was the one who gave her father painful misgivings. Eager that his extremely trusting daughter marry the right man-and not be taken advantage of by any male-Stuart became dead set against her interest in Snapper Foster, a medical student from a poor family. Jennifer though that perhaps Stuart disliked Snapper so much because Snapper's uncle Bruce Henderson, who used to be friends with Stuart and Jennifer in college, had had a falling out with Stuart when Bruce fell in love with his Jennifer. Stuart said that was nonsense, it had nothing to do with that. It was Snapper's seeming indifference to his daughter-even more than his low class background or his uncle-that angered Stuart Brooks.

Snapper had met Chris at college, Genoa City University. Snapper had one more year left in medical school, and Chris was a sophomore. They often met in the college cafe, and Chris seemed to spend a lot of time there hoping to bump into Snapper. They had been dating for a while, but nothing ever happened between them.

And Snapper Foster didn't seem to know himself what he felt toward Chris. His main concern, before his personal happiness, was getting through medical school and helping his mother, Liz Foster, put his younger brother, Greg Foster, through law school. Liz's husband had deserted the family seven years before, leaving her to work in a factory and her two sons and daughter, Jill Foster, to fend for themselves. Somehow Liz managed, though often at the expense of her health. Jill had helped out by working as a beautician, although she really wanted to be a glamorous model. Liz wanted nothing more than to se her two sons professionally successful and married to the right girls-like Chris Brooks.

Chris invited Snapper Foster to her family's house for dinner. It was a big night for her, and she was very excited. But when the time came for Snapper to arrive, he didn't. Chris was crushed, but ever the optimist, she believed there must have been a good reason for his absence.

Finally catching up with Snapper, Chris asked his reason for not showing up. He merely told her that he had slept through the evening. In truth, he ad, being exhausted from school and the job he held to help pay for his family's need. But what he had omitted was that he had been at Sally McGuire's, and Sally, also being in love with Snapper, had not awakened him as he had asked her to.

Chris continued to have faith in Snapper, but her father began to dislike him more and more. Stuart decided that he distrusted Snapper so much that he hired a private investigator to follow Snapper. That very next day, Chris was waiting for Snapper at the deli. She was there all afternoon and just as she was getting ready to leave Snapper happened by. She offered him a ride home, and gave Snapper the keys to her car. Once they were on their way, she convinced him that a country drive would be nice.

They stopped in an out of the way area and Snapper and Chris began to make out. But Chris noticed this was not like before, Snapper was much more aggressive with her. When he started to go too far with her, she pulled back. Snapper said that it was okay, he could wait until she was ready, but Chris could tell he was upset. He drove back to his place and handed the keys back over to Chris. As Snapper walked back up the steps, Chris called out "I love you!" Snapper told her he loved her too. After Chris drove off, instead of going inside, Snapper went to a pay phone and called Sally McGuire, the waitress from Pierre's. He was coming to see her.

Sally hurriedly put on her sexiest negligee. Snapper was coming over! Snapper and Sally had been seeing each other for quite some time now. They were good for each other, Sally thought. They were so much alike. Not like that rich brat Chris. No, Sally was the woman for Snapper. Although Snapper was always mentioning that he was not ready for marriage, Sally could not let a soon to be doctor slip through her fingers. No, tonight she was going to get pregnant with Snapper's child. She had to do something to seal her fate, otherwise she was going to be stuck in Genoa City for the rest of her life. When Snapper arrived, it didn't take long for Sally to seduce him after Chris had turned him down. He spent the entire night with Sally, with Stuart's private investigator snapping photos through the open window the whole time!

The next day, Stuart came home early. He wanted to talk to Chris alone. He explained that he has proof that Snapper has been cheating on her with a woman named Sally. Chris was devastated. She was also angry at her father for interfering in her life. A crushed Chris decided to move out of the house, find herself a job, and be self-supporting.

Chris was beginning to enjoy her new life. She was working for Greg Foster, Snapper's brother and a lawyer at Legal Aid, and had found an apartment. Without her knowledge, Stuart Brooks, her dad, had decided to subsidize young Greg Foster's law practice if he would hire Chris as his secretary. Everything went along smoothly, until Chris found out about the arrangement. Furious at her father, feeling he wasn't letting her live her own life, she left the job. Greg was upset, since he was now falling in love with the woman who loved his brother, Snapper.

After looking for work to no avail, Chris stopped by a bar for a drink. A personable young man approached her, and after paying for her drink, insisted on escorting Chris home, to make sure she was safe. Only, George Curtis had other things on his mind. Following Chris to her apartment, he broke in and brutally raped her. Chris had no one to turn to and called her sister Leslie. Leslie and Brad arrived in time to clean her up and take her to the hospital. Leslie was curious as to why Brad had so much medical knowledge. She began to realize that she really didn't know much about Brad at all. She was in love with a stranger!

Jill Foster, Snapper and Greg's younger sister, worked in a beauty shop. But Jill had dreams of a much wealthier lifestyle. She would constantly complain about her work, but she knew she had no way out, since her family desperately needed what little money her salary brought in. Snapper tried to convince her to go to college, but Jill wouldn't. One of Jill's frequent customers was the very rich Kay Chancellor. Jill envied her money and power and dreamed of the day she would have everything Mrs. Chancellor had. One day her opportunity arrived. Mrs. Chancellor, known as a drunk, fired her personal secretary in a fit of anger. Jill took this chance to ply her way into Kay's life. She persuaded Kay to give her a try and it worked.
