Remember When - 1980

Speed link to Victor Newman

Jack Abbott
It was in 1980 when Jack Abbott claimed not to have any interest in the family business. In those days, Jack was too busy chasing after women. However, Jill Foster changed all that when she told Jack she liked "ambitious, successful men." Jack ran to his father asking if he could be part of Jabot and John agreed. For years, John had wanted his son to be part of Jabot and he thanked Jill by assigning her and Jack to work on a Jabot ad campaign. Jill had recently given up her hair salon job in exchange for a position at Jabot where she rapidly climbed the corporate ladder to become head of the merchandising department.

John and Jill Abbott
In 1981, John fired Jill during an argument over the ad campaign. But later, John gave Jill her job back and a big fat kiss to boot! Jill admitted she too was attracted to the old guy and had hoped for much more than a kiss. However, when John refused to take her with him on a business trip, Jill tracked down Jack and slept with him! John found out, dumped Jill and moved to New York where he ran Jabot by remote control. Jill quit Jabot and told Jack she was having second thoughts. Jack dumped Jill and ran into the arms of Patty Williams.

In 1982, John made Jack the President of Jabot after Jack agreed to marry Patty. Ashley Abbott, just home from graduating from college, was the maid of honor. On the day of the wedding, Jack got drunk and ended up sleeping with Jabot model, Diane Jenkins.

John returned from New York to discover Jack was making a mess out of his company. In no time, John found himself falling in love with Jill again and Jill couldn't have been more pleased. Jack was desperate to break the couple up and even paid Diane to find another woman for his father but that didn't work so Jack told John that Jill had a son named Phillip.

At first John didn't like being deceived but after hearing Jill's sob story, he proposed marriage. The two were later wed.

Patty Williams
In 1983, Patty became pregnant but didn't want to tell Jack who was having sex in his office frequently with Diane. Jill bugged Jack's office and encouraged Patty to show up unannounced one day. Patty flipped when she caught Diane undressing Jack. As she rushed down the hall, Patty tripped over a potted plant and had a miscarriage.

Jack's next move was to try selling Jabot without John's knowledge. When John found out, he screamed at Jack and began having a heart attack.

Meantime, Patty had found out that Jack only married her to get control of Jabot. Outraged, Patty shot Jack in his office three times. Amazingly, Jack survived. Patty divorced Jack and left town.

Jill soon found herself having major problems with John's uppity maid, Mamie Johnson. In a snit, Mamie quit and when John found out he threw a fit. He told Jill to get Mamie back no matter what. Jill panicked because she had been spreading the word that she was pregnant and was afraid John was going to find out about her lies. She fled Genoa City during a blizzard, became stranded and called Jack who rescued her. They found a cabin for the night, one thing led to another and they ended up having sex.

What Jack and Jill didn't know was that a stranger had been looking through the cabin window that night taking pictures!

Katherine Chancellor
As 1984 kicked off, Katherine Chancellor ended up with the negatives. Jill pleaded with Katherine not to ruin her marriage to John but Katherine was still stinging as Jill had ruined her marriage to Phillip Chancellor.

It wasn't until 1985 that Katherine finally got around to showing John the photos which all had the face of Jack removed. Angry, John went home to confront Jill only to find her laying face down. Rushed to the hospital, Jill survived to tell John how sorry she was. John became so upset he had to be sedated. Later, John gave Jill 30-days to move out.

It wasn't until 1986 that John found out his own son was the man in the photos with Jill! The divorce was bitter but Jill got 20% or Jabot stock, a seat on the board of directors and a plush executive position paying $150-thousand per year. John confronted Jack, tossed him out of the Abbott home.

To make matters worse, Jack was found guilty of shooting Jill after she was found in a hotel suite near death. Again, Jill survived. Jack was sentenced to five years probation, with one year to be spent working in a soup kitchen by day and locked up at night.

What wasn't known until later was that Sven, Jill's masseur, had shot Jill after she had rejected his advances. As time moved on, Jill found herself stuffed in a meat locker by Sven. Jack rescued Jill and was vindicated but Sven got away.

Years later, the Abbott's have moved on with their lives.

Victor Newman
Victor Newman had a feeling that his wife Julia and Brock Reynolds were getting too close. Knowing how Victor is when he gets jealous, Julia agreed to stay with Victor. But Victor was convinced Julia and Brock were lovers, so he turned to Lorie Brooks for comfort. Victor gave Julia a gun when a robber attacked her. While this was going on, Brock caught Victor and Lorie kissing, and continued his romance with Julia.

Julia decided she wanted to have Victor's baby. But behind Julia's back, Victor had a vasectomy. Julia began modeling at Michael Scott's studio, which was partly owned by Victor. Discouraged, Brock left town because Julia wouldn't end her marriage to Victor. While Victor was out of town, his former secretary, Eve Howard, popped out of the woodwork. Julia didn't like Eve, who she knew had a one-night stand with Victor. Confused, Julia slept with Michael and was immediately overwhelmed with guilt. Her friendship with Brock was platonic but now that she had slept with Michael, Julia realized she had cheated on Victor for the first time. When Julia accepted a modeling assignment for Jabot, with Michael as the photographer, Victor suspected they too were lovers.

Victor Newman's first marriage

It was 1980. Victor Newman has just acquired Chancellor Industries, a photo studio and his bride of ten years named Julia had only been in town for a few weeks. Things were going well.

As far as anyone knows this was Victor's first marriage and like Nikki Reed whom he would marry in the coming years, Julia was only 16 when the two were wed.

Julia was a model at Jabot Cosmetics and didn't know that Victor didn't want any children and had himself snipped.

Victor told Julia he wanted her to become pals with photographer Michael Scott so that he could judge Scott's work. The suggestion was ludicrous but like the many women he would marry in the future, Julia was young and dumb.

What Julia didn't know - until Eve Howard told her - was that Victor had sired her son, Cole, and she wanted child support.

Like Sharon Newman, Julia went into shock and into the arms of Michael. A few months later Julia told Victor that he was going to be a daddy.

Victor was stunned. Hadn't he had a vasectomy? Unable to deal with the situation, Victor tormented Julia. He didn't want a baby and demanded she pick one. Either him or the baby.

Julia's nerves were so shattered she entered the hospital for some rest unaware that Victor had her room bugged. Victor witnessed a meeting between Michael and Julia during which they agreed to run off together.

Determined that no woman would scuttle his boat, Victor had a bomb shelter built in the basement of the Newman ranch complete with the latest high-tech equipment. Then he lured Michael to the ranch and locked him in the shelter.

When Julia returned home Victor turned on the camera so that Michael could watch them having sex.

Meantime, Julia couldn't figure out why Michael hadn't contacted her. That is, until she received a note from him concocted by Victor. It was a Dear Jane message making it appear as if Michael had dumped her.

Seemingly destined to live a life of misery Julia got a break when she stumbled upon one of the hidden TV monitors. Together, she and Michael figured out the code to open the shelter door. But as they were making a getaway Victor returned.

During a struggle with Michael, Julia was pushed down the flight of stairs and lost her baby as a result. A paternity test showed that her baby was in fact sired by Victor.

Feeling guilty, Victor allowed Julia to leave town with Michael. No criminal charges were ever pressed and Victor said at the time that he would never see Julia again.

Max Schmitt
It was 1980 when Eve Howard was hired again as Victor Newman's secretary. Newman told her that if she stuck her nose into his personal business she's be unemployed in a heart beat. What Newman didn't know was that Douglas Austin had confided in Howard that Newman had an interest in her son, Cole. Newman even wrote Cole into his will. A mere child at the time, Cole would get one half of the Newman estate upon Victor's death.

Eve wanted Victor dead so she could get her hands on Cole's money. To that end, Eve learned that Victor's personal cook, Charlie, was on vacation so she took over cooking Victor's meals. Eve had a friend named Max. Max, a chemist, whipped up a poison which Eve fed to the great man over time.

When Victor became dizzy and fell down one day, his former wife, Julia, called the doctor who said all Victor needed was rest. As Victor and Julia planned a trip to Tahiti, Max poisoned Victor's horse hoping the drugged animal would cause a fatal accident.

When Julia checked in on Victor, Eve gave her a note saying that Victor had decided he was going to Tahiti alone because he didn't want her cramping his style. At the time, Victor had considered himself an invalid.

Thinking Victor was out of the country, Julia called him in Tahiti but a tropical storm prevented the call from going through. Victor had never left the ranch. The next time he asked Eve to call the doctor, Dr. Schmitt showed up, made Victor think he would be fit as a fiddle soon and then cooked up a new drug to make Victor feel better.

Victor did feel better but became addicted to the drug. Soon, Victor couldn't eat. As death settled over him, Victor gave part of his meal to the dog, Albert, and then began to dream. When Julia saw the dog, she put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Victor was outraged. He set a trap for Eve by proposing to her and making it clear that as his wife, she would inherit his fortune. Eve told Max she was going to marry Victor and Max flipped out.

Julia helped Eve prepare for the wedding but by the time they got to the house, paramedics were loading what appeared to be a body into an ambulance. They were told Victor had died.

A wake was held. The casket was closed. Victor was hiding above and watched the mourners. After the burial, Eve and Max returned to the cemetery and dug up the grave. The plan was to cremate the body to eliminate any evidence.

Back at the ranch, Eve looked around at all that had become hers. Then, she began to freak. Victor's face was everywhere! She built a shrine in Victor's bedroom and had the coffin placed on his bed. Max and Eve were later married by a drunken judge who thought it odd to have a dead man in attendance.

After the ceremony, Eve went to say good-bye to Victor and Max smacked her in the face! Then, Max stuffed her body inside the coffin which he thought was empty. The cops arrived and during a struggle, Max fell on a pitchfork and died. Victor felt so sorry for Eve he had her committed to a funny farm.

April Stevens
In the early 1980's, young Paul Williams was a rebel without a cause. He became involved with a cult known as the New World Commune and met April Stevens at a cult rally. Stevens was an ignorant, wrong side of the tracks, girl with no self-confidence, indifferent parents and a desperate desire to be loved.

Her need for loving made Stevens an easy target for Williams and it wasn't long until Stevens became pregnant with his baby. Williams wanted nothing to do with her or the baby and instructed her to "get rid of it."

Unbeknownst to Williams, Stevens gave birth to a baby girl. Later, when he learned the truth, Williams was outraged. He told Stevens he was not interested in being a husband or a father. Stevens and her baby went on welfare living in a one room apartment.

All along, Mrs. Mary Williams had her nose shoved into her son's business even baby-sitting the Stevens baby and at every opportunity telling her son to take care of his responsibilities. Like all stories in Genoa City, this one dragged on and on until one day Heather Stevens came down with meningitis. At the hospital, like she would later at her murder trial, April Stevens bawled uncontrollably. She never carried Kleenex and let the snot run over her top lip and into her mouth while pleading with Mr. Williams to do the right thing.

April Stevens wanted Williams to marry her so that her child wouldn't die an illegitimate baby. Williams gave in and married her on the spot. However, he never legally adopted the baby. As expected, the baby made a remarkable recovery after the marriage. They tried to make the marriage work but it wasn't meant to be. Stevens turned to Nikki Foster's husband Greg for support. An affair blossomed. Williams turned to Steven's deceptive sister, Barbara. Eventually, April Stevens got the message that she had no future with Williams. She and her daughter left town. It would be another 12 years before they would return.

Little known tidbits
Paul Williams found Nikki Reed on the street selling flowers and she convinced him to join the New World Commune. When Paul's older brother, Steve, tried talking him out of it, the two got into a fight. Pregnant at the time, Mary Williams tried breaking her two sons up and sustained serious injury as a result. After losing the baby, Mary's condition became critical. Paul donated blood to save her and blamed himself for the miscarriage.

Victor Newman's Ghoulish Ways

Victor Newman had just acquired Chancellor Industries, a photo studio and his bride of ten years named Julia had only been in town for a few weeks. Things were going well in 1980 Genoa City. As far as anyone knows this was Victor's first marriage, and like Nikki Reed whom he would marry in the coming years, Julia was only 16 when the two were wed. The suggestion was ludicrous but like the many women he would marry in the future Julia was young and dumb.

What Julia didn't know - until Eve Howard told her - was that Victor had sired her then six-year-old son, Charles Victor (Cole), and she [Eve] wanted child support. Like Sharon Newman, Julia went into shock and into Michael's arms and a few months later told Victor he was going to be a daddy. Victor was stunned. Hadn't he had a vasectomy? Unable to deal with the situation Victor began tormenting Julia. He didn't want a baby and demanded she pick one. Either him or the baby.

Julia's nerves were so shattered she entered the hospital for some rest unaware Victor had her room bugged. Victor witnessed a meeting between Michael and Julia during which they agreed to run off together. Determined that no woman would scuttle his boat Victor had a bomb shelter built in the basement of the Newman ranch complete with the latest high-tech equipment. Then he lured Michael to the ranch and locked him in the shelter.

When Julia returned home Victor turned on the camera so that Michael could watch them having sex. Meantime, Julia couldn't figure out why Michael hadn't contacted her. Feeling guilty, Victor allowed Julia to leave town with Michael. No criminal charges were ever pressed and Victor said at the time he would never see Julia again.

In 1983 Eve and her friendly chemist Dr. Max Schmitt concocted a diabolical plot to poison Victor. Julia, back in town, overheard a smidgen of their plan thanks to crossed telephone wires and warned Victor he was in danger. She suspected Eve was involved in the poisoning and eventually proved it by having the poison Eve administered to Victor analyzed. An antidote was found and Victor regained his health. When he realized Eve had tried to poison him so that her son, whom she believed Victor had fathered, could inherit half of his wealth, Victor meted out some punishment. He pretended to be dead. When Julia confided to Eve she thought Victor had been murdered, and that she wanted his body exhumed for an autopsy, Eve sent Max to dig up the corpse. Max was so shocked to learn Victor was alive he fell against a pitchfork and died. Eve was carted off to the loony bin.

Chancellor Industries History

In 1980 Katherine Chancellor appointed Derek Thurston chairman of the board of Chancellor Industries. In place, Thurston hooked up with Judy Wilson and together they overthrew George Packard, who, as president, had been running the company since Phillip Chancellor's death.

That same year Victor Newman came to town. His pal, Douglas Austin, has tried and failed many times to get his hands on Katherine's fortune and when she developed an attraction for him decided to take advantage of it by saying that if she could make Derek jealous, Derek would appreciate her more.

At the time Derek was only staying with Katherine because in 1978 she'd tricked him into marriage. When Derek rejected her Katherine started drinking and tried to commit suicide. This told Jill Foster - who also wanted Derek - that Derek still had feelings for the old woman so Jill set her sights on Stewart Brooks and later John Abbott.

The deal between Katherine and Derek was that they would live together for one year. She would set up a $100,000 trust fund for Jill's kid, Phillip, on the condition he not tell Jill and at the end of the year she would give him full ownership of the Golden Comb, a beauty salon, and agree to his request for a divorce.

It's not clear how Katherine came to trust Newman - but she did. She wanted him to watch over Chancellor Industries while she was off on a second honeymoon Derek had planned in an effort to keep his job. Austin followed the two on their cruise. Derek saw him, got jealous and returned to Genoa City leaving Katherine alone on the love boat. Torn between the two men Katherine jumped overboard. Thought to be dead, Katherine's company was legally left to Newman for a five year period.

Katherine returned in 1981, She turned CI over to Judy Wilson. Wilson's first job was to fire Derek. The next year Katherine fell in love with the owner of the Bayou strip club where Nikki Reed worked.

The history file makes no mention of Chancellor Industries again until 1990 when Katherine's lawyer told her that the business was intact and in her control following its sale during a time when Katherine had been kidnapped by Clint Raddison (he mastermind the kidnapping) who was the husband of Rex Sterling's daughter, Gina Roma, subsequent to Katherine's marriage to Rex.

Genoa City was founded by Civil War hero Garfield Dandridge Chancellor in 1973. Garfield's great-great-grandson, Phillip Chancellor II, ran CI until he met an untimely death when his wife drove them over a cliff.
