Paul Williams/Lauren Fenmore

When you've been busted by your wife for humping another woman and your marriage was already about to go into the dumper, who you gonna call? If your name is Paul Williams, the most clueless private detective this side of the Mississippi, chances are you'll want to see the woman you caught shoplifting years ago and fell in and out of love with repeatedly.

Williams' current betrayal of the Bug isn't the first time he's screwed around. In 1981 he was nearly killed by Nikki Reed's neighbor and friend. Edward loved Nikki and had tried unsuccessfully to whack all the men in her life, including Paul, Cash and Andy Richards, whom Nikki had dated. Edward thought it was their destiny to be together for eternity and when she wouldn't agree to be with him, was just about to blow them both away with dynamite when Paul came to the rescue.

In 1982, Williams infiltrated the mob and became involved with Pam, the woman who had played a part in framing his father. Paul was really in love with a young whore named Cindy Lake who helped him find out about the mob's illegal activities.

The following year, Williams was trying to clear his father of criminal charges. Carl had been set up by the mob when he tried to breakup the syndicate. Paul had gone into hiding when his cover was blown so to lure him out, the mob kidnapped his mother. But as luck would have it, Paul and Carl rescued Mary and the mob went to the slammer except for the ring leader, Tony DiSalvo.

The charges against Carl were dropped and Nikki married DiSalvo because he had a hot video of her. He promised to destroy the tape after the wedding but Paul and Andy Richards rescued Nikki before the wedding. DiSalvo was so mad he tried to shoot Paul, but Cindy got in the way and took the bullet. Before DiSalvo could get off another shot, Jazz, a friend of Paul's, shot and killed him.

It was 1984 when Williams fell for Lauren Fenmore after he caught her shoplifting. Their romance caused Lauren to lose interest in rock star Danny Romalotti but she continued to perform with Romalotti's band. After she and Paul were marriage, Lauren became pals with Shawn Garrett - her biggest fan.

As 1985 rolled around, Lauren's mother, JoAnna, returned to Genoa City, with the hope of reconciling with her former husband and Lauren's father, Neil. But Neil was already in love with ex-con Gina Roma - Romalotti's sister. Lauren wanted to see her parents reunited so she checked into Gina's background and discovered that Gina had a criminal history. Lauren exposed Gina's secret to Neil, who broke off their relationship. Gina vowed to get even with Lauren.

Checking the calendar, Lauren note that her marriage was already in trouble. Paul wanted to start a family but Lauren only pretended she wanted to get pregnant. All along, Shawn Garrett was getting jealous of Lauren's professional partnership with Romalotti and wanted him out of the picture. Shawn began slipping Danny poison, which affected his voice and jeopardized his music career. He also taped Lauren's private conversations with Paul. Finally, Lauren and Paul briefly separated, reconciled and divorced. Shawn was mad as hell. In order to keep Lauren under his control, Shawn threatened to murder Paul if Lauren didn't do what he wanted.

1986 found Garrett forcing a pregnant Lauren to divorce Paul and move in with him by threatening to have Paul killed by a professional hit man. After moving in, Lauren tried unsuccessfully to contact Paul to let him know she still loved him. Lauren agreed to tour Japan with Shawn by her side. Shawn thought Lauren was thrilled but soon discovered she was repulsed at the sight of him and only wanted to keep Paul alive. Upset, Shawn buried Lauren alive in San Francisco.

Paul and Andy got a psychic to help locate Lauren. When Paul and Andy rescued her, Shawn was killed in a shootout. Paul and Lauren reconciled their marriage.

Bored with being a housewife, Lauren got Paul to let her join the Clueless Detective & Alarm Company as a private eye. Lauren also submitted a nude photo Paul, with his knowledge, to a contest being held by a women's magazine. Paul's entry won and his photo appeared as a centerfold. When Paul discovered the truth, thanks to one of Mary's church friends, he threw a fit then tried to buy every available copy of the magazine. He was also furious with Lauren.

In 1987 Paul forgave Lauren for the nude photo incident and proposed they remarry. Lauren turned him down but changed her mind. By then it was too late., Paul had decided that remarrying was not a good idea.

Lauren turned her attention to Brad Carlton. Learning Brad's estranged wife, Traci, was away at Stanford, Lauren told Brad that Traci's former lover, Tim, was also at Stanford. Thinking his wife was having an affair, Brad allowed himself to be seduced by Lauren. Traci returned to Genoa City and reconciled with Brad but despite the reconciliation, Lauren continued her affair with Brad.

In 1988 Paul fell for Cassandra Rawlins. Cassandra was the wife of Paul's client, George Rawlins who told Paul he wanted to have a baby but was impotent. The plan was to have Paul father the baby!

By 1989 Cassandra had fallen for Paul and was willing to divorce George. But when George had a heart attack, Paul suggested that she wait. George's doctors informed him that he was suffering from a terminal illness. At the same time, George discovered that Paul and Cassandra were lovers. Determined to get even, George made it look as if Paul had murdered him. Before his death, George also arranged to have a heated argument with Paul, while Victor Newman was nearby and able to overhear. After George's death, Victor surmised Paul had been set up.

During the investigation it became clear Cassandra was also involved in the frame-up. Victor succeeded in proving Cassandra a black widow when he was able to seduce her. Cassandra promised a mysterious man named Adrian Hunter that she was desperate to leave Genoa City and start a new life with him. When it looked as if Paul would be convicted, Carl Williams decided to fake his son's death.

1991 found Lauren and Sheila Carter pregnant with Dr. Scott Grainger's babies. Sheila lost her baby at birth but needed a baby to continue manipulating the good doctor. She got a pregnancy pad and made everyone think she was still expecting. Paul was helping Lauren through her labor and she gave birth to a baby boy. Pretending to be out-of-town, Sheila called Scott and announced that she had given birth to a baby boy. Sheila arranged to return home with a baby she obtained from a baby broker. Determined to have another baby, Lauren seduced Paul.

It was during Paul's investigation in 1992 that he learned Sheila had faked the birth of her baby. Lauren and Scott were living together again so that Scotty Jr. would have both real parents under one roof. Lauren and Scott arranged to remarry. At about the same time Paul's former wife, April Lynch popped up and Lauren began a secret affair with Brad.

Lauren demanded a divorce from Scott in 1982. Scott learned he was suffering from a terminal illness. When Sheila found out she told him she still loved him. Scott died while on a vacation with Lauren in Catalina.

Paul was suspicious of the bruises on April's face. When he asked if he could visit their daughter, Heather, April got edgy. She claimed her bruises were the result of a car accident. When April went home to her husband Robert, he accused her of sleeping with Paul and beat her. Paul and the Bug later figured out April was the victim of spousal abuse. Paul got April to attend a support group of battered wives. Danny left town to star in a Broadway play opening the door for the Bug and Paul to get closer.

In 1994 the Bug got a letter from Danny announcing he wanted a divorce. Bummed out, the Bug vowed to move on with her life. The divorce finalized, the Bug learned that Danny had gotten another woman, Phyllis Summers, pregnant. Before Danny junior was born, Danny married Phyllis and moved to Genoa City.

At about the same time, April, returned too after being beaten by Robert. April discovered she was still attracted to Paul but he gently turned her down. April returned to Robert who threatened Heather's life so she stabbed him with a letter opener and was subsequently charged with murder. The Bug and all-purpose attorney John Silva volunteered to take her case. April got a suspended sentence and returned to New York with Heather. Paul's relationship with the Bug heated up and he proposed. The Bug put him on hold because she still couldn't accept Danny's marriage to Phyllis.

The Bug and Paul were sidetracked when they went to Vietnam to find Keemo Violein and brought him back to Genoa City.

Ex-wife and husband, the Bug and Danny shared a tender kiss on the day before Chris's wedding to Paul in 1995. Phyllis saw them together. She didn't want the Bug near Danny so she rented a car and tried to squash the Bug big time. In order to save the critter, Paul jumped in front of the car and they were both hit. The Bug survived but Paul had been left sexually dysfunctional. Feeling less than a man, Paul canceled the wedding. The Bug tried to take her mind off their break-up by gathering dirt on Phyllis so that Danny could get a divorce and custody of his son. Phyllis caught on and altered Danny junior's, blood tests so it looked as if Danny really was his father. As the year came to an end, Paul became a man again and proved it to a happy Bug.

Mari Jo Mason figured out the Bug had a link to the FAX that could potentially destroy her relationship with Jack, so in 1996 she kidnapped the Bug and held her prisoner at Newman Enterprises. The Bug was rescued by Victor Newman and Paul and Mari Jo committed to a mental institution.

The trauma prompted Paul and the Bug to make wedding plans again but on the day before the ceremony, the Bug humped Danny and was discovered by Paul! The wedding was off.

The Bug freaked when Michael Baldwin came up for parole in 1997. The critter pleaded with the parole board to keep Baldwin locked up but he was released and landed a job as a paralegal at the law firm that represented Phyllis in her divorce and custody trial. After taking the job, Baldwin and Phyllis became involved. To help Danny. the Bug and Paul got the goods on Phyllis. They learned that Brian Hamilton was really Daniel's father. Danny and the Bug began to grow closer as they worked together to prepare for the custody trial. The evidence showed that Phyllis had drugged Danny and that they had never had sex while was still married to the Bug.

Paul's dad resurfaced in 1998 in another town with a new life as Jim. The Bug investigated and discovered that Carl was alive and living under a new identity. She struggled over whether to tell Mary and Paul who suspected she was having an affair with Danny. Following the Bug to Virginia, Paul came eyeball-to-eyeball with his dad and was shocked when Carl didn't recognize him.

The next year had the Bug and Paul hoping to start a family, but the critter couldn't get pregnant. Exhausted from the Cassie Newmans court case, the Bug went to a three-month symposium in Hawaii. When she returned, the Bug was unhappy with her life.

The following year things began to change. Michael Baldwin convinced the Bug to become a partner in his law firm. Paul wasn't pleased. His mother pestered him to make a baby. It was at that moment the Bug and Paul's marriage began falling apart.
