My memory is
fuzzy where the original baby switching story is concerned and because I
thought it might help those who don't remember when Sheila Carter first
got it into her head to switch babies with Lauren Fenmore Grainger, I went
into the history files for a look see.
The story starts near the end of 1990.
Lynne 'Yes-Boss' Basset, having pined for her boss a number of years
without success, got excited when it appeared as though Paul 'Clueless'
Williams was going to give up on Lauren. Lauren, torn between Clueless and
the man she was married to, told nurse Sheila to stay away from Dr. Scott
Grainger and then herself got caught with Clueless.
Sad and dejected and nicknamed by this time "Dr. Gruesome", Scott went to
his room at the God Have Mercy Medical Center laboratory where Sheila
filled him full of booze and they had sex.
Always wanting to appear the innocent one, Clueless urged Lauren to repair
her marriage and so she and Scott tried working things out. That left
Sheila high and dry until she decided to tell Scott that he'd knocked her
up. At the same time Lauren announced she was pregnant after having
miscarried months earlier. She arranged a romantic night with Scott to
give him the good news only he trumped her news with that of Sheila's
pregnancy and that he was the daddy.
Lauren threw the bum out and for several weeks Scott kicked himself as if
he'd had his druthers he would have preferred Lauren over Sheila. By the
end of the year Lauren had filed for divorce.
1991 rolled in to find Lauren trying to keep her pregnancy a secret from
Scott. While she didn't love him any longer she didn't like that he was
seeing more of Sheila either. Faster than a speeding sperm, Sheila's baby
was still-born. Since no baby might mean no Scott, Sheila began wearing a
pregnancy pad and left the city to visit her mother, Molly, who was led to
believe that Sheila was in fact pregnant and about to "deliver".
Sheila delivered alight. She went straight to a baby broker who arranged
to get her a baby boy. When Sheila discovered that Lauren had in fact
delivered a boy she switched the brokered baby with Lauren's and managed
to change the birth records too!
When the birthmark on her son disappeared, Lauren thought it odd. She
asked a nurse who said birthmarks have a way of disappearing and then left
town determined to keep her baby Dylan's paternity a secret.
During the interim Scott and Sheila were wed and Scott found out about
Lauren's baby anyway. Assuming Clueless to be the daddy, Scott looked
forward to a new life with Sheila and his baby, Scotty. All was going
swimmingly until Molly, who knew about the baby switch, came to Genoa
City.
Lauren returned home and began dating Clueless again which made Sheila
think Scott might not have sired the baby she stole. That Clueless could
be the daddy terrified Sheila, and as the future would show, rightfully
so.
Then one day Molly blew a brain gasket. She literally had a stroke while
on her way to tell Lauren the truth. The stroke severed Molly's ability to
speak and Sheila, the loving daughter, took her in and soon Molly was
starting to talk again albeit mostly babble. Not wanting to take any
chances, Sheila terminated Molly's speech therapy classes and eventually
had her committed.
At the Shady Pines loony bin Molly received more therapy without Sheila's
knowledge and then lo and behold but what Lauren's baby died.
