Remember When - 1991

Say what?
We couldn't help but take issue with Delaina Dixon's point of view in a December 2001 TV Guide report.

Dixon wrote: If anything good came out of Ryan's death it was the solemn retrospective of Ryan and Victoria's love over the years shown during his funeral scenes. This couple, who have been struggling to make their union work since 1991, finally seemed to be on the right track back to happiness a decade later. But a gunshot ended any chance of them rebuilding a future together. Through a simple love song Y&R retraced the path Victoria and Ryan traveled down to find one another again. While we can only dream of what level of bliss Victoria and Ryan may have discovered in the future, we can always remember the happier moments they shared in their past.

But as the GCNews looked back, the bliss could not be found.

Ryan McNeil/Victoria Newman

From the outset, Ryan McNeil and Victoria Newman's relationship was plagued by Newman's inability to have sex. She did hump McNeil when he gave her an engagement ring after knowing her for only a few weeks. When the 17-year-old Newman told Ashley Newman, Ashley rushed her to have an AIDS and pregnancy test. The doctor lectured Newman on the dangers of having unprotected sex and she became petrified when she was told it would be a year before she could be sure she wasn't infected with HIV.

Victoria Newman was furious with McNeil, who begged her for a chance to make it up to her. By 1992, Newman was still rejecting McNeil, had been told by her parents to stay away from him and didn't learn until it was too late that McNeil was humping Nina Webster!

McNeil saw the advantages of marrying Newman when it appeared he might get to be next in line to run Newman Enterprises. Ms. Newman wanted to wait until she was 18. In the interim, Webster gave McNeil a red sports car. McNeil could taste the Chancellor money and took Webster to his apartment where he humped her out of gratitude. McNeil didn't know that Newman was hiding in the closet and saw the whole thing.

Determined not to let Webster get her man, Newman tried repeatedly to get McNeil in bed. Each time he refused. Newman then said she didn't want to wait to get married and that she had seen him with Webster. To prove he loved her, McNeil told Webster it was over and later met Newman in Chicago where, using a fake ID, they got married.

When Webster found out, she threatened to tell Victor Newman. Knowing that her sexual inhibitions were making things difficult for McNeil, Ms. Newman gave McNeil his walking papers. McNeil said he'd stick around if she agreed to see a sex therapist.

In the meantime, Victor Newman had hired Paul Williams to trail his daughter only to have his worst fears confirmed. Mr. Newman had McNeil arrested on criminal sexual assault charges and then gave him a blank check to get out of his daughter's life. McNeil refused.

As they tried making a life together, the McNeil-Newman relationship was hounded by Mr. Newman and Webster. By 1993, McNeil was back with Webster and had even asked her and little Phillip Chancellor to move in with him as a sort of "trial" marriage.

Victoria Newman meantime had fallen for the new Newman ranch stable boy known as Cole Howard whom Ms. Newman married by the end of the year.

Were these the happier moments of Victoria Newman and Ryan McNeil's life?

---------

With the death of his wife Cassandra in 1991 Brad Carlton and Traci Abbott began growing closer. But there was a problem. She was pregnant and wanted to keep it a secret hoping Brad would marry her because he really loved her and not because of the baby. If Ashley Abbott weren't in the way Traci might have had smooth sailing ahead. Ashley needed Brad's shoulder to cry on because things with Victor Newman were not going the way she wanted.

Brad was about to tell Traci it wouldn't be possible for them to move on together when she blurt out she was pregnant and if need be would raise the child by herself. Brad changed his mind and the two were wed for the second time.

Business matters drew Ashley and Brad together frequently and Traci didn't like it. Even though her sister and Brad tried telling Traci they were just friends Traci couldn't get past her insecurity.

In 1992 Colleen Carlton was born. The birth should have brought Brad and Traci closer together but because Traci continued seeing Ashley as the enemy things didn't get better even though Ashley was married to Newman.

When Traci's publisher, Steve Connelly, popped into Genoa City to help Traci with her book they hit it off like white on rice. When Brad saw what was happening he was fit to be tied. He couldn't understand how Traci could fall for another man. But when Brad read Traci's manuscript he saw the light and watching the way Steve bonded with his daughter, well, it was downright tearful.

Brad gave Traci the green light and before he could even think of changing his mind Traci was packed and out of town to New York where she and the baby lived with Steve. Brad's heart was broken. He turned to Lauren Fenmore and Ashley for a shoulder to cry on. As soon as the plane landed in New York City Traci got to work and Brad was later served divorce papers.

It wasn't until 1994 that Brad began having trouble adjusting to Steve being a father to his daughter. When Colleen called him, "Mr. Carlton" one day he flipped. Traci was upset too that he was sucking around Fenmore again. The stress must have been too much because Brad suffered a heart attack while he was in the saddle with Lauren. As Brad recovered in the hospital Traci realized her feelings for him had never really died. Talk about insecure. This woman was worse than Nina Webster.

When Traci found out what caused Brad to end up in the hospital she and Lauren got into a major cat-fight. Traci would later wonder if she really loved Steve. By this time Brad was finished with Traci and told her so. Traci returned to New York where Steve had become jealous over Traci's insecurity.

Brad did make a big fuss about getting custody of Colleen. In 1994 he got a judge to grant visitation rights. The judge was supposed to review the case in 30-days but never did. Brad made three visits to New York to see his daughter. During the last visit he gave Colleen a pearl necklace which angered Traci. "She's too young for a present like that," Traci hissed. The fact the necklace had been purchased from Fenmore's didn't help.

In 1995, Traci returned to Genoa City to attend Jack Abbott's marriage to Luan Violein. She told Brad about her marriage problems and was surprised to learn that Brad had hooked up again with Nikki Newman and were engaged to be married.

Traci returned to New York with Steve and has lived happily ever after.

By 1991, Lauren Fenmore was pregnant and was keeping her pregnancy a secret from Scott Grainger. They were estranged and Lauren hated the idea of Scott spending time with Sheila Carter, who was also carrying Scott’s child. Sheila knew the baby was the key to getting Scott for herself, so when her baby was still-born, she wore a pregnancy pad, and left Genoa City to visit her mother Molly a few days before the big "delivery.'' Sheila arranged to have a baby broker get her a boy, since she knew Lauren was going to have a boy. She switched the brokered baby with Lauren's and changed the birth records. When Lauren questioned the nurse about a birthmark on her newborn that had mysteriously disappeared, the nurse summarily dismissed Lauren's concerns, saying birthmarks frequently disappeared. Lauren left town, determined to keep her son Dylan's paternity a secret from Scott. Later, she found out that Scott and Sheila had married. Scott, meanwhile, thinking he was the father of Lauren's baby, looked forward to starting a new life with Sheila and Scotty,

Sheila was worried when her mother arrived in Genoa City, because Molly knew about the baby switching. When Lauren returned to Genoa City, she and Paul Williams began dating again, Sheila became concerned Scott might not be the father of the baby she swiped. She freaked at the thought Paul might be the father. Molly collapsed with a stroke while she was on her way to tell Lauren the truth about the babies. Sheila insisted Molly come to live with her and Scott. As Molly was learning to speak again, Sheila stopped Molly's speech therapy. It was to her benefit if Molly didn't regain her speech. Sheila later had Molly institutionalized, where she began working with a therapist without Sheila's knowledge.

Lauren's little boy, Dylan, died suddenly and Lauren was devastated. Scott consoled Lauren as his marriage to Sheila was falling apart. Sheila, meanwhile, was flipping when Molly was able to say ''bah be.'' What if the truth ever came out? She decided to get Molly out of the picture, by shipping her back to the farmhouse in Michigan, where Molly's friend Naomi, a retired speech therapist, continued working with Molly to help her regain her speech.

Grieving over the loss of her son, Lauren seduced Paul in the hopes of conceiving again, and unhappily learned her plan didn't work.

By 1992, Scott was weary of his marriage to Sheila, and did his best, along with Paul, to raise Lauren's spirits. Paul persuaded Lauren to seek professional counseling to deal with her grief over losing Dylan, and soon turned to Scott for comfort. Scott continued to spend more time with his son at Sheila's, but he soon fell in love again with Lauren.

Meanwhile, Sheila was up to her old tricks, and threatened to have Molly committed when she showed progress in regaining her speech. When Molly noticed Scott JR’s birthmark, Sheila hired a plastic surgeon to remove it. When Scott brought up the topic of divorce, Sheila threatened to leave town with Scotty, putting Scotty in the position of choosing between Lauren and his son. Despite Lauren's protests over Paul's discovery that Dylan was not Scott's biological son, Paul investigated the possibility of a baby-switch. Adding fuel to the fire was the fact that another OB/GYN Scott hired to work in the lab with him recognized Sheila as the same woman he had treated for a miscarriage a year ago. Scott insisted the doctor was mistaken, and Sheila insisted the doctor take a hike.

Confident that Sheila was acting more rational and would be able to handle it, Scott told her he planned to file for divorce. Sheila didn't take the news well, and forced Lauren to drive to Michigan, where she held Lauren and Molly hostage in her mother's farmhouse. When a fire erupted, Lynne Basset and Paul managed to rescue Lauren and Molly, but authorities discovered a body. It was assumed to be the body of Sheila but, in fact, she was on her way to Los Angeles, where she found work as nursemaid to Eric Forrester's son.

Lauren and Scott each feared the other would gain custody of little Scotty, so they decided to marry and raise their son together. Neither of them was happy in the marriage, and Lauren was soon seeking comfort in the arms of Brad Carlton. Little did Scott or Lauren know that they would soon share Molly's shock upon Sheila's return to Genoa City.

By 1993, Lauren was content living Scott, raising little Scotty and having an affair with Brad. During a romantic interlude, Sheila returned, took a photo of the lovers in bed and made it into a puzzle which she began sending piece by piece to Lauren in a blackmail attempt to gain custody of Scotty.

Lauren thought the pieces were some sort of an ad campaign and continued working on her marriage to Scott. However, Brad was determined to have her since he had come to realize that Traci and his daughter had started a new life with Steve Connelly in New York.

Lauren freaked when Sheila announced she was alive and well. Sheila wanted Lauren to keep her mouth shut or the photos she took would end up in family court. Lauren also learned that Sheila planned to marry her good friend, Eric Forrester, but her efforts to stop the wedding failed.

By the end of the year, Lauren had decided to end her marriage to Scott. What she didn’t know was that Scott had developed a mysterious disease and was dying. On his deathbed, Scott was stunned when Sheila showed up to say she wanted to take care of him. Scott told her it wasn’t meant to be.

Scott improved long enough to take a trip with Lauren to Catalina where they got divorced. Soon, Scott died. While Lauren grieved, Brad stepped in to fill the void in her life.

At the start of 1991 a pregnant Lauren Fenmore was keeping the baby a secret from Dr. Scott Grainger. She hated the idea of Scott spending time with crazy Sheila Carter who was also carrying Scott's baby and had filed for divorce.

Sheila knew a baby would make Scott her man once and for all so when her baby was still-born she stuffed a pillow (pregnancy pad) under her shirt then left Genoa City to visit her mother. From there it was on to a baby broker to get a boy since she knew Lauren was going to have a boy. Shelia then switched the brokered baby with Lauren's and the birth records too.

Lauren thought it odd when a birthmark on her newborn disappeared, but a nurse at the God Have Mercy Medical Center said it was common so Lauren didn't give it a second thought as she too left the city determined to keep her son Dylan's paternity a secret from Scott.

As time passed Lauren found out that Scott and Shelia had married and Scott all this time was thinking Paul 'Clueless' Williams had sired Lauren's kid. He and Shelia named the baby Scotty.

Sheila flipped when her mother showed up in town one day because Molly Carter knew the truth. Lauren had taken up with Clueless again causing Sheila to fear Scott might not be the father of the baby she stole and Clueless was. Just as Molly was on her way to tell Lauren the truth she had a stroke. Shelia took Molly in and was happy because Molly was unable to speak. That is, until Molly started speech therapy during which she spoke like a one-year-old with words like "Ba Be".

To get Molly out of the way Shelia put her in a medical warehouse where, unbeknownst to Sheila, Molly began therapy again.

Then Dylan died. Lauren went into mourning and Scott's marriage began falling apart. Shelia found out Molly could say "Ba Be" and worried she'd spill the beans. Only one thing to do. Ship Molly back to her farmhouse in Michigan. As luck would have it Molly's friend, Naomi, was a retired speech therapist and kept working on Molly's speech impediment.

Similar to what Sharon Newman is doing now, Lauren felt the way to get over her grief was to have sex with Clueless. Another baby would make her forget about the dead one. Too bad, Clueless' sperm was no good. Or at least that was the speculation as Lauren didn't get pregnant.

By 1992 Scott was tired of Sheila. He worked with Clueless to snap Lauren out of her funk and she in turn turned to Scott for comfort. It didn't take long for Scott to get busy with Lauren. Meantime Sheila was freaking. Molly was speaking better and she couldn't have that so she threatened to have Molly committed to a nut house. That's when Molly spotted Scotty's birthmark. Sheila went immediately to a plastic surgeon and had the mark removed.

When Scott told Sheila he wanted a divorce she threatened to take the baby and leave town. Scott was confused. What to do? Keeping Lauren would mean losing his son. Ace detective that he is, Clueless learned Dylan was not Scott's biological son so he looked into the possibility of a baby-switch. And too, an OB/GYN Scott had hired to work at the medical lab with him picked Sheila out a woman he'd treated for a miscarriage a year earlier. Scott couldn't believe it and Shelia told the doctor to get lost. That little fire out, Scott told Sheila he was filing for divorce prompting her to snatch Lauren whom she took to Michigan where both Molly and Lauren were held hostage.

Again, as luck would have it, Clueless and his puppy-dog secretary Lynne 'Yes-Boss' Bassett showed up just as the fire Sheila had set to the farmhouse broke out. Clueless rescued the damsels in distress and a body discovered in the charred ruins was thought to be Sheila's. What nobody knew was the body was that of the meter reader who had been there earlier and had the misfortune of meeting Shelia.

As for Sheila, she was well on her way to Los Angeles where she found work as Eric Forrester's nursemaid.

Par for the corpse nobody thought to check dental records and DNA had not been discovered in those days.

Fearing they'd get into a custody battle after that Scott and Lauren got into a marriage of convenience for little Scotty's sake. Lauren wasted no time getting into Brad Carlton's pants which is just about when the Genoa City News declared her the city's biggest slut.

In 1993 Sheila returned. She caught Lauren getting it on with Brad and took a picture. As Katherine Sterling had done once, Sheila had the photo made into a puzzle and began sending it in parts to Lauren as blackmail. Sheila wanted custody of Scotty. Nearly as dumb as Sharon, Lauren thought it was some ad campaign! At about the same time Lauren had grown tired of Brad and wanted Scott back. See? This is one slut through and through.

The problem Brad had was that his wife had divorced him. Traci Abbott was no dummy. She knew what a dog Brad was/is and moved to New York where she lived with her daughter, Colleen, and Steve Connelly. Then Lauren found out Sheila was alive, that the puzzle was no ad campaign and for her to keep quiet lest Sheila send the incriminating photo to family court.

Learning Sheila planned to marry her good friend Lauren tried preventing the wedding while at the same time keeping it all a secret from Scott. The marriage went off so Lauren went to see all-purpose attorney John Silva who told her to come clean with Scott. Instead, Lauren made plans to end her marriage to Scott unaware Scott had come down with one of those mysterious, deadly diseases.

Sheila, racking up the frequent-flyer miles, popped into Scott's hospital room one day to say she'd care for Scott until his dying day. Scott told her to take a hike. Lauren, her cold heart bleeding, wanted to make Scott's remaining days good ones so they went to Catalina to settle their divorce. Scott died at the scene. The death sent Lauren right back to Brad's bed. The whore.

By 1994 Brad was bummed because his daughter was calling Steve daddy and him "Mr. Carlton." It was therefore some consolation that Lauren's kid saw him as a father figure. As smart as she was to have dumped Brad, Traci decided he shouldn't be with Lauren. During a roll in the hay with Lauren Brad had a heart attack. This made Traci want him back and thus caused a showdown with Lauren over who got the dog. Fortunately, Brad didn't want the former Bon-Bon Queen so Traci went back to Steve.

As 1995 came to and end Lauren decided there was nothing for her in Genoa City so she planned a trip to Los Angeles to work on a Forrester/Fenmore line of fashions. That's when Sheila surfaced again to tell Lauren LA wasn't big enough for both of them.

And as if it wasn't clear what a dog Brad is, he took up with Nikki Newman and they planned to get married.

The archives make no further mention of either Lauren or Sheila beyond this period. As both women faded into oblivion there were more important matters to sort out like, who shot Victor Newman?

If at First You Don't Succeed
Sheila Carter History
April, 1995 -- When Sheila Carter learned from hubby Eric Forester that the widow Lauren Fenmore was heading to Los Angeles she went into panic mode.

"I've got to stop her," Sheila thought to herself, and picking up the phone dialed We Fly You Anywhere Air for a flight to Genoa City. As luck would have it, a WFYA flight was leaving within the hour.

The plane actually having arrived before it took off, Sheila was in the mini-megalopolis thirty five minutes later and inside Lauren's office. Her back turned, Lauren, of course, didn't see Sheila. However, just as Sheila reached for a letter opener Lauren turned around to ask, "What are you doing here?"

Lauren went on to say she'd spoken with Sheila's shrink who wanted to discuss Sheila in person. Thus, Lauren was going to LA. Way back then doctor-patient confidentiality did not matter.

"You're not going anywhere," Sheila snarled, again reaching for the letter opener. To get Sheila off her back Lauren agreed to cancel the trip. The moment Sheila left her office she rescheduled it, however. It didn't take long for Lauren to arrive in LA or for Sheila to catch up and find Lauren sitting in a hot tub. Pushing Lauren's head underwater, Sheila was certain she'd drown her worse enemy.

Alas, it wasn't to be. Being the resourceful woman Lauren is, she was quick to wrap her big lips around a tub air jet, wait until Sheila was gone, then wait for Sheila to return so she could hit her over the head.

It does not matter what happened after that as everyone knows Sheila didn't die. It does matter that ten years later this nonsense continues.
