Remember When - 1994

Jump to: When Victor dug up Eve Howard's grave
Malcolm Winters arrival

General recap

Victor Newman and Nikki were shocked to learn that the daughter, Victoria, and Cole Howard had eloped to Vegas in early 1994. Upon their return, Victor revealed that Cole was his son, which forced an annulment. While going through the late Eve Howard's belongings, Victor discovered a letter from another man to her, which cast doubt on Victor being Cole's father. Victor immediately arranged to have blood tests run on Cole, the other man and Eve's corpse. When Nikki tried to resume her romance with Cole, a devastated Victoria left town before she had learned that Cole wasn't interested in her mom.

Receiving confirmation that he wasn't Cole's dad, Victor and Cole immediately tracked Victoria down. Cole shared Victor's news with Victoria and they returned to Genoa City, where they arranged to remarry. When Victoria had discovered that Cole and Nikki had once been intimate, she had traveled to New York City and had agreed to pose for a nude centerfold. The publisher had promised Cole that the photos wouldn't run. Nevertheless, a few months later, Victoria's shocking centerfold was on newsstands around the country. Angered by the publisher's unethical behavior, Victor bought every existing copy of the magazine and had them destroyed. He then purchased the company that published the magazine and fired the publisher. Rather than attend college, Victoria opted to take a job at Jabot, working with Ryan.

Hope revealed to Victor that she had never been with a man sexually. Soon after, she and Victor made love. When Victor proposed marriage to her, Hope accepted. Nikki was so distraught by the news that she crashed their wedding and made a spectacle of herself. Nikki considered reconciling with Jack, but he surprised her by announcing that he was ready to file for divorce. Meanwhile, Hope learned that she was pregnant. Victor and Hope were forced to do some serious soul-searching when Hope's doctor said the baby could inherit her blindness. When medical tests revealed that there was a good chance the baby would be born blind, Victor urged Hope to have an abortion, but she resisted, and the tension in their marriage escalated.

Victor and Nikki's son, Nick, returned from his Swiss boarding school for the summer. After becoming interested in an attractive young woman named Sharon, Nick decided to stay in Genoa City. Meanwhile, Sharon's friend, Amy, was also interested in Nick. Eventually, Nick and Sharon began a romance, which angered Sharon's former boyfriend, Matt. Sensing the closeness between Sharon and Nick, Sharon's mom, Doris, warned her daughter not to make the same mistake twice and become pregnant again. Still hurting over the pain of giving her first baby up for adoption, Sharon resisted Nick's attempt to make love. Stung by Sharon's rejection, Nick turned to Amy for physical comfort. When Doris was hospitalized after falling from her wheelchair, Victor relieved Sharon's financial worries by taking care of Doris' hospital bill.

Paul and Christine grew closer after Danny sent Christine a letter from New York, announcing that he wanted a divorce. Heartbroken, Christine resolved to get her life on track by following Danny's wishes. When her divorce was finalized, Christine resumed her maiden name of Blair. Eventually, Christine learned that Danny had gotten another woman, Phyllis, pregnant. Before their son, Daniel, was born, Danny reluctantly married Phyllis. Soon after, they moved to Genoa City.

Paul's former wife, April, returned to Genoa City after being beaten by her husband, Robert, over the holidays. Although April was still attracted to Paul, he gently turned her down. Concerned for her daughter, Heather, April returned to Robert. When he threatened Heather's well-being, April fatally stabbed him with a letter opener. April was charged with murder. To her relief Christine Blair and John Silva volunteered to represent her in court. Christine and Silva's dynamic representation won April a suspended sentence. After being reunited with Heather, April announced to Paul that she wanted to begin a new life away from Genoa City. Paul's relationship with Christine heated up and he eventually proposed marriage. But Christine resisted giving Paul an answer because she was still trying to accept the news about Danny's marriage to Phyllis.

Alex "Blade" Bladeson and Ashley married. While their house was being built, they moved into the Abbott home. Complications quickly developed when Blade's former lover, Mari Jo, moved to Genoa City. Blade was troubled when Mari Jo became involved with Jack Abbott and secured a job at Jabot. After Mari Jo also befriended Ashley, Blade told her to leave town or he would reveal the truth about her to Jack. But Mari Jo forced Blade to back down when she accused him of being responsible for the death of his twin brother, Rick. Blade realized that Mari Jo was going to become a permanent part of his life when she announced her engagement to Jack. However, Ashley accidentally discovered Mari Jo's true identity and confronted the woman about her past relationship with Blade. No one was more shocked than Mari Jo when Blade's presumed-dead twin brother Rick showed up in Genoa City.

Christine became friends with the owner of restaurant called the Saigon Shack, run by a Vietnamese woman named Luan. Luan hadn't seen her son, Keemo, for years because he still lived in their native country. When Luan was shot by robbers at the restaurant, she pleaded with Christine to find her son. Christine and Paul immediately traveled to Viet Nam, where they found Keemo and brought him back to Genoa City. After a tearful reunion, Luan recovered from her wounds. Keemo moved in with his mom, and her daughter Mai. Through a series of events, Christine deduced that Jack had been Luan's lover while he was a soldier in Viet Nam, and had fathered Keemo. With Christine's assistance, Jack and Luan were reunited. Luan told Keemo that Jack was his father, which angered Keemo, because he had always believed that his American father had deserted Luan. When Keemo learned that Jack and Luan had been separated by the war's ending, he accepted Jack as his father. However, Mari Jo wasn't pleased to learn of Luan's new role in Jack's life.

After making love to Lauren, Brad suffered a heart incident, which forced him into temporary hospitalization. Kangaroo Court
June 1994 - April Stevens and her bratty daughter, Heather, had just reconciled after a mother/daughter squabble. "Can you ever forgive me?" Heather asked. To show just how much she could forgive the child, April went to ask Clueless if the brat could move in with him and the Bug. The Bug was opposed so Mary Williams took the kid in.

Meanwhile, Clueless the Bug and all-purpose attorney John Silva were listening to the tape Dr. Lynch had recorded before April killed him. Clueless was certain it could be used as the basis for April's defense. "This is our defense?" the Bug hissed. Later, they played the tape for April. "That's not the same tape," she whined even though it was the tape. Silva told April the kid would have to be called as a witness and that sent April into a screaming and bawling frenzy. Heather joined in claiming she didn't know anything about the murder.

It was late at night when Clueless returned to his office. "Did the trial recess for the day?" Lynne 'Yes-Boss' Bassetthound asked even though she knew the answer.

When the trial resumed the following day, the Bug threw a fit and demanded a side bar when the prosecution asked a witness a question the Bug didn't like. It was only then the Bug revealed that Clueless and the defendant share a daughter. "I find this all quite fascinating, but what's it got to do with this case?" the prosecutor snorted.

When Mary Williams testified that April was "a woman in turmoil" there was a flurry of objections. The judge didn't say a word which prompted Silva to demand the judge make a ruling. Everyone was told to sit down and proceed. Mrs. Williams went on to say, "It looked like the woman had been beaten," when asked if she had ever seen April after the murder.

As the most ridiculous trial in Genoa City history continued, April testified she killed her husband in order to protect her daughter.

While waiting for the jury verdict, Silva asked the Bug what she thought about the jury. When the Bug responded, Clueless asked Silva what he thought about the jury. "Pray for a miracle," April said but only moments earlier had said, "I don't know much about praying."

Worried her mother was going to prison, Heather began bawling, "What will happen to me? Where will I go? What will I do?" April ran to the Bug. "Will you raise Heather?" she asked.

The Bug was repulsed and told her to ask Clueless. During this entire ordeal, April had never found the courage to tell Heather that Clueless is her father. Just then word came down that the jury had reached a verdict.

Found guilty, April was sentenced to five years probation! The judge also ordered 1300 hours of community service. She was directed to help educate young people about spousal abuse. With tears running down her face and snot dripping over her top lip and into her mouth, April said to the judge, "You mean I'm not going to prison?"

Just a few days later, The State of Wisconsin allowed April to leave town. The prosecutor objected. Clueless jumped up to tell the judge that April had family in Genoa City and to appease everyone he would make sure she was employed. In fact, he was going to give her a job at his firm!

April never went to work for Clueless. She never served a day in prison, never reported in to a probation office and never performed a minute of community service. April and Heather departed for New York and were never seen again. To this day, Heather does not know that Clueless is her father. April was going to tell her just before the jury came back with the verdict but never got around to it.

Family affairs - a brief history
by Brent Kellogg

It was 1994 when Malcolm Winters blew into Genoa City and was almost immediately arrested for robbery when he fit the profile of a common thief. Some thought the arrest was for wearing a baseball cap backwards or for not paying his bill at the Center 4 Disease where he was treated for free by Dr. Olivia Winters. Charges were dropped when fingerprints on the wallet stolen from the victim didn't match.

Winters' half-brother, Neil became concerned when Dr. Winters agreed to dance with the new man on the block at a 4th of July pool party at the Abbott residence. When Malcolm began making comments about what a hot baby Dru Winters was the hair on Neil's neck stood up.

Dru was surprised to discover that Neil had a half-brother and Neil explained he had distanced himself from Malcolm because he was a known trouble-maker. The first day Malcolm arrived he informed Neil that he had reformed but Neil didn't believe him. Still, Dru made friends with Malcolm, which led Malcolm to believe that she was attracted to him.

Groggy from over-medicating on cold medicine her sister gave her without a prescription, Malcolm stopped by one day to check on her for Neil, who was away on business. Dru thought Malcolm was Neil and allowed him to have sex with her. At first, Malcolm thought that Dru recognized him and told Olivia what happened.

When Dru said was pregnant, Olivia was sure Malcolm was the father of her baby. Dru considered having an abortion, but when her doctor revealed that she wouldn't be able to have another pregnancy, changed her mind. Rather than learn the truth about the baby's paternity, Dru resolved to keep the incident secret from Neil, and assumed that he was the father.

Malcolm got a job at Blade Bladeson's photo studio working with Dru as the model. A few months later Dru gave birth to a baby girl, Lily.

Malcolm changed his focus to an attractive doctor named Stephanie, but her medical practice kept her too busy for a personal life.

Meantime, Olivia had found out that her husband was cheating on her with a woman named Keesha Monroe. Eventually, Nathan broke it off and Keesha began dating Malcolm.

Olivia began treating Keesha for AIDS and discovered that she was the woman Nathan had been having an affair with.

Olivia blew a gasket because she had been trying to get pregnant again and was worried Nathan might have exposed her and their son Nate to HIV.

When Malcolm found out he broke it off with Keesha but she soon developed full-blown AIDS. Realizing Keesha was near death, Malcolm made her dying wish, to be married, come true. After the ceremony, Keesha died. Bitter, Olivia made it difficult for Nathan to see Nate so Nathan kidnapped the boy and disappeared. After several weeks on the run, Nathan decided to return the kid. Just feet away from their front door, Nate wandered away and Nathan rushed out into the street to fetch him only to be fatally hit by a car.

At the hospital, Nathan to apologize to Olivia for hurting her and then died.

Dru was offered a modeling contract but Neil insisted she turn it down so she could focus on being a full-time mother and wife. Behind Neil's back, Dru signed the contract and began secretly accepting out-of-town modeling assignments. Malcolm agreed to keep the secret.

Neil found out and split up with Dru but later told her he wanted them to have another child. But behind Neil's back, Dru took birth control pills so that she could continue her modeling career. Neil flipped when he found out and left Dru.

While trying to help Olivia cope, Malcolm fell in love with her. They were married and even took Nate on their honeymoon. Later, Malcolm surprised Olivia by announcing his desire to adopt Nate.

But things changed with Callie Rogers, an old girlfriend of Malcolm's showed up. When Olivia found out about Callie, she feared Malcolm might still be interested in her. Malcolm said he wasn't but Olivia didn't know Malcolm as well as she thought. How could she? They had only known each other for a year. Gina Roma hired Callie to sing at her restaurant.

The stress of Callie's continued presence in Malcolm's life took its toll so Malcolm and Olivia agreed to divorce which led Malcolm to wonder if Neil and Olivia were having an affair. It didn't take long for Malcolm to propose to Callie and she accepted. But Callie forgot to tell Malcolm that she was already married to her former manager, Trey Stark.

Olivia came down with aplastic anemia. When she heard that Nate had witnessed an attack on Malcolm by Trey's goon, she revoked his visitation rights. Callie finally confessed that she was married and left town.

It was 2000 when Dru returned and Lily contracted chickenpox. Neil invited them to stay at his apartment and just when it looked as if they might reconcile, Dru returned to Paris. Malcolm chased after her and convinced her to return.

Olivia's health continued to decline so Dru volunteered to donate her bone marrow and gave Neil the green light to go after Olivia. Dru hooked up with Malcolm briefly before going back to Paris.

All better, Olivia got it into her head that Malcolm wasn't a good role model for Nate and threatened to reduce his visitation rights. A court battle resulted with Malcolm getting visitation rights.

In 2001, Neil thought he wanted Olivia but after just one night kicked her to the curb because he had become interested in a new attorney named Alex Perez. What Neil didn't know was that his brother was interested in her too. And so the story recycled with the brothers battling again over the same woman as 2002 began.

Can you dig it?
With all the drama surrounding the paternity of Ashley Carlton's baby, hearken back to April 1994 when Victor Newman was trying to find out whether Cole Howard was his son.

Because Cole's mother, Eve Howard, had croaked aboard a luxury liner only days earlier and had been shipped back in a box, Victor ordered her dug up and DNA extracted from her rotting body.

Cole found out almost immediately, went over to Victor's penthouse suite and asked, "Why did you dig up my mother?"

In his best mumbled monotone, Victor said, "I had my reasons. There are things you don't know about your mother. She was a very devious woman."

Cole hauled off and cold-cocked the old man with one punch knocking him out cold. The blow did not leave a mark on Victor's pot-holed face and he was up and walking around mere moments later.

"Very few men could do what you've just done," Victor whispered. "That's a hell of a right cross!"

Since it was silly to keep Cole in the dark, Victor told him why he dug up Eve.

The news excited Cole because he had wanted more than anything else to marry Victor's daughter. But if Victoria Newman were in fact his sister it could never be. Seeing that Cole was anxious to tell Victoria they might not be blood related, Victor told Cole to not say anything to anybody and sent him back to the Newman ranch to work on his book.

Pecking away at the only laptop in the world that never needed to be plugged in, Cole was working at the tackyroom when Victor's former wife walked in.

"Don't ask me why I'm feeling so good because I'm not saying a word," were the first words out of Cole's mouth.

As Nikki Newman stood there with her mouth open ready to plant a big kiss on his lips, Cole added, "You've helped me bring me out of myself."

When the DNA tests results became official and Cole knew that Victor was not his father, he rushed to tell Victoria only to discover she had withdrawn all the money from her savings account and left town.

Sitting on a bench at a bus stop waiting for the next Greyhound out of town, Victoria did not see the man only six feet away steal her purse. With no money, Victoria took a job working as a waitress at a diner.

At about the same time Cole had figured out that Victoria could be in any of "12" cities. Since going to each city would be a real pain, he hired a skywriter to write in the sky these words:

"Victoria - please phone home. I love you, Cole."

Although the odds were insurmountable, it just so happened that Victoria was on a smoke break, went outside the diner, looked up at the sky and saw the message.

Did Jack Abbott Serve His Country?

With all the talk about certain people and their service to the country, the Genoa City News thought it would be a good time to reflect on Jabot Cosmetics CEO Jack Abbott's old claim that he served in Vietnam.

It was November, 1994, when much was being made about how Abbott had found lost love, and mother of his child, Luan Volein while serving in 'Nam. But as is so often is the case, the tale was a figment of Abbott's imagination.

Here's how we know.

In 1980 John Abbott moved Jabot Headquarters to Genoa City and appointed his son CEO since most of the family at that time had the good sense to live elsewhere. This, of course, was another contradiction as all recent conversations had led just about everyone to believe the Abbott's had lived in Genoa City their entire lives.

It was young Abbott's first major opportunity to shine in the family business as he has just graduated from Harvard Business School.

To help put things into perspective the GCN did some number crunching. It was assumed that Abbott got his Masters Degree in 1978. We also cut him some slack by presuming he accomplished this goal in two weeks. Looking back it isn't far-fetched considering that Nick Newman managed to get a college degree after attending a few weeks of night school at Genoa City University and Christine 'Bug' Blair got a four-year law degree in only two years.

So Abbott graduated college in 1976 at age 22. The next logical assumption was that he graduated from high school in 1972 at age 18.

Fresh out of college at the time was Ashley Abbott whose arrival in Genoa City in 1982 substantiates the theory. She and Jack have an approximate age difference of between five-six years. This would have made Ashley 35 and Jack pushing 40.

Many history books say that all Allied troops had been withdrawn from Vietnam by early 1973. So for Abbott to claim he served in Vietnam simply couldn't have been possible.

What's that? What if Jack had graduated high school in 1970 at age 18? Why, yes! It would have been conceivable for him to have been overseas from 1970-1972. That's assuming he went to college after, as Abbott says, he returned from the war in 1976 and graduated at age 24, earned his Masters between 1978-79 and was ready to join the family business in 1980.

So, even though there are no historical facts to prove Abbott was ever a soldier, it is somewhat feasible when the story is given enough spin.

One thing is for sure. Jack Abbott will never have to worry about losing his job because of some sex scandal even if the scandal was true. In Genoa City extramarital sex is worn like a Badge of Courage. If business leaders in this city had to wear uniforms there wouldn't be enough room for all the medals. Even when John Abbott caught his son porking his wife, very little was made of it. Jack got a few slaps on the wrist, loss control of Jabot for a short period but went on to regain power.
