Remember When - 1998

Grace Turner was having a dilemma. She loved Sharon Newman's daughter, Cassie. Finally, Grace told Sharon she and Tony Viscardi had found the child she gave up for adoption years ago. Sharon was so excited her husband, Nick, thought she was pregnant. Sharon said no which pleased Nick because he wasn't ready to have their family grow. After an endless battle, and with the Bug's free legal help, Sharon got her precious little girl back and Nick agreed to adopt Cassie.

Danny and Phyllis Romalotti's divorce and custody hearing came to and end. Danny was the all around winner when a copy of Sasha Green's manuscript turned up. Danny was happy but needed someone to help raise little Danny, Jr. He asked Joani the nanny for help and she agreed but Danny really wanted the Bug.

Phyllis got to work planting seeds of doubts in the mind of the Bug's current husband, Paul Williams. Mary Williams didn't help the situation and Paul grew suspicious when the Bug told him she didn't want to have a baby. One day Danny scooped up the kid and went to Europe. The two haven't been seen since. Likewise, Phyllis departed Genoa City.

Still estranged, Dru and Neil Winters agreed to give their marriage another try. Dru even went so far as to look into invitro fertilization. But in the end, Dru and Neil parted ways.

Tricia Dennison and Ryan McNeil returned from a ski trip during which Ryan had given Tricia her first humping experience. Confused, Tricia confided in Jill Abbott and sister, Megan. Tricia became possessive of Ryan and continually pestered him about divorcing Nina Webster. Tricia soon got what she wanted when Ryan divorced Nina and married Tricia.

At the Newman ranch, Veronica Landers, working as Sarah the maid, wanted to tell Dr. Josh the truth. That she was his dead wife. Josh wanted Nikki to have his baby and Nikki's slave, Miguel was becoming attracted to Sarah. After killing Josh, Sarah pumped four bullets into Nikki. Later, Victor confronted Sarah at the stable where Sarah fell on a pitchfork and died.

Billy Abbott was in a boarding school and John Abbott wanted him home. Later, Billy would return all grown up.

Michael Baldwin accused Victor Newman of destroying Diane Jenkins' life. "What's your point?" Newman asked. "We regard your offer as totally unacceptable" Baldwin replied. "Now you listen to me you punk. You heard the Newman name so you took it upon yourself to gain fame and fortune. Don't take me for a fool," Newman retorted.

"What are you doing here?" Phillip Chancellor growled at Ryan McNeil. "Just go. Leave us alone!" he whimpered and then disappeared. Nina Webster was at wits end. What will she do now? A light bulb lit up over McNeil's head. The answer is simple. He'll move back in with Nina! "I'll make up the spare bedroom" Nina exclaimed. An amazing feat considering she lived in a two bedroom apartment. She sleeps in one, Phillip in the other.

At the Chancellor Mausoleum, old lady Katherine Sterling asked Jill Abbott why she keeps staring out the window at Phillip Chancellor's grave. Jill accused Katherine of stealing "a whole life from me". Ether appeared to ask why Katherine allows Jill to speak that way to her and all but got a good slap across the face from Katherine as Jill continued to rant about how things might have been. Jill picked up a photograph of Phillip and as she moaned, Katherine walked around sputtering how she killed the man.

Sharon Newman and the orphan kid were surprised to see Tony Viscardi appear at the ranch with good news. He and Grace Turner are "officially engaged." Sharon rambled that if things with Nick hadn't worked out she would have been tempted to hit the sheets with Tony. "But, you never know about the future," Tony remarked. "Nope! You never do," Sharon replied.

Up at the main ranch house, Miguel Rodriguez was preparing to go into town as Nikki Newman badgered him about seeing his "lady love" Veronica. Miguel gave it to the divorce queen with both barrels! After all he's done for the old cow she wouldn't hire Veronica and he doesn't like it one bit!

Veronica was stuffing burritos at the Tijuana Taco when her fat boss Gary walked up behind her, pinched her on the butt and demanded she start seeing him. Veronica told him to buzz off. It wasn't long until Miguel showed up. Veronica fell into his arms. Miguel loves Veronica. He'll do anything for her. Gary spotted Veronica sitting down on the job and instructed her to get back to work!

Wearing a black hat, a tiny black dress she had to be poured into and hair styled to look like Marilyn Monroe, Nikki Newman told Victor Newman she can't wait to become his wife.

Michael Baldwin called Newman's settlement offer to Diane Jenkins, "Garbage! The man is getting away with highway robbery."

Jill Abbott was concerned about Ryan McNeil's "son". "That little boy is in crisis." She wanted McNeil to move back in with Nina Webster. "I don't think it's that serious. He'll get over this" McNeil said of Phillip Chancellor just hours after saying the situation was bad enough to arrange a meeting with a shrink. Ms. Zonka, Chancellor's teacher, reported the kid's grades were slipping and suspected family dysfunction.

Thinking Victoria Newman was having a miscarriage, Neil Winters said, "A miscarriage would simplify things."

Rushing off to the doctor's office, Ms. Newman called Dr. Winters to warn that she was spotting and needed immediate care. At a restaurant at the time, Winters took off but upon arrival at her office told Newman she was sorry for being late because she had to stop along the way to help out in the ER! Newman's visit was a total waste of time because Winters simply referred her to an OB1/Canobie. Before her patient departed, Winters squinted her eyes and asked, "how do you feel about being a mother?"

June 11, 1998

Victor Newman gave Diane Jenkins what he called "a very generous settlement" proposal.

Malcolm Winters became a cosmetics marketing expert when he summoned Jack and Ashley Abbott together to hear a proposal for Jabot skin care products. Jack gave the plan a go, dismissed Winters and nothing more was ever heard about the plan.

Old man John Abbott, who had stopped dyeing his hair orange, returned from vacation with baby Billy.

Dr. Olivia Winters asked Ashley Abbott to attend their sorority reunion in Boulder.

Tricia McNeil suggested her husband's new "son" be taken in for a mental observation. Ryan McNeil suggested the entire family seek help. Nina Webster was opposed saying if McNeil hadn't fallen for "Malibu Barbie" her son wouldn't be having identity problems.

Victoria Newman began "spotting" when Neil Winters reminded her they should get married so that he could be the father of her child.

The Bug prepared a report to the Bar on Michael Baldwin and upon learning Baldwin was representing a client going up against Victor Newman, snarled. "Don't you ever underestimate Victor Newman. Not ever!"

June 10, 1998

Diane Jenkins had decided to go after Victor Newman for everything she could get.

At the Jaw Bow gym where they were working out, a baseball cap worn backwards Malcolm Winters told his brother Neil that being related to all that Newman money was going to be fantastic.

Ashley Abbott demanded to know if her former daughter-in-law was pregnant. "I want the truth and I want it now," she told Victoria Newman.

Nina Webster said her son needed time to adjust to having Ryan McNeil as his new "father".

The Bug and detective Clueless celebrated their "two week anniversary" with a roll in the hay and gifts including a watch the Bug gave Clueless with the inscription "forever" on the back. The Bug claimed she would love Clueless "forever".

Mary Williams accepted the Bug into the family and asked for forgiveness.

June 5, 1998

All-purpose lawyer John Silva was summoned to the Newman ranch where he was instructed to draw up a financial settlement for Diane Jenkins. Silva reminded Victor that Diane "made quite a sacrifice" and the settlement should be generous.

In Madison, Alice Johnson was pacing her mother's floor. She's going stir crazy. Looking near death, Millie was sitting in a nearby chair. Alice continued to whine. She's tired of being alone. She needs a man. Someone like Victor Newman. "He's so sexy he gives me goose bumps. He could jumpstart my battery any time. He's also got lots of money too."

Back in Genoa City, the Bug was delivering flowers to Mary Williams who whined briefly about being old. Mary walked over to the mantle where a photo of Carl was prominently displayed. "That's a picture of Paul's father isn't it?" the Bug asked as if it had never met Carl before. Mary explained she's been thinking a lot about Carl recently. The Bug wanted to know more about Carl. "My husband was a police officer you know," Mary said. "Yes, I know" the Bug replied.

Mary went on and on. Carl disappeared years ago. Just vanished. Left work one day and never came home. Her private detective son allegedly "searched months" for Carl without success. Now, Mary has given up hope.

Meanwhile, at an unknown location, Carl was looking out the window. He remembers the day he met Ruth, the woman he's living with now. Ruth found Carl beaten and battered along a deserted highway "million of miles from nowhere." ... Carl is now "Jim."

Ruth wondered if "Jim" has ever thought about his past. No! Ruth is his life now. No point in dwelling on the past. All he recalls is waking up on that highway. Beaten to a pulp. Left for dead. If Ruth hadn't come along. "You are an amazing woman. Please don't ever send me away."

Back at Jabot, Victoria Newman and Neil Winters bellowed about telling Cole Howard about her baby. Outside the door, Ashley Abbott hung onto every word but scurried away before being seen. When Neil left, Ashley appeared. "What the hell are you doing here?" Victoria growled. Ashley babbled. She's worried about her once step-daughter. By the way, "I know you're pregnant."

"Just stay out it it. Get out. Just get out! Leave me the hell alone!" Victoria spat as she told Ashley she has no intention of telling Cole. Stupid Ashley asked when she conceived. Silly bitch. Figure it out. Ashley threatened to tell Cole or she would. "If you do you'll be sorry," Victoria warned.

Out in the hall, Neil ran into Cole. "What are you doing here?" Neil asked as he whisked Cole into an empty office. "Victoria. She's pregnant and you're the father." ... "Is this some kind of sick joke? There is no way she can be pregnant by me. It's another one of Vikki's sick stunts. I know what she's like. She's taking one last shot at me so you can go back to her Neil and tell her I'm not buying it. I feel sorry for you. Victoria has obviously made you a pawn in her little game. I am not the father. Period."

The Bug returned to Legal Aid where it summoned detective Clueless to say it had just seen his mother and she's missing Carl. "She'll get over it. She always does" Clueless remarked. The Bug wanted Clueless to talk about Carl. Clueless would only say, "it's like he disappeared into thin air." ... The Bug persisted. Does Clueless think Carl may have disappeared on purpose? Clueless thinks daddy is dead. The Bug is worried about Mary needing some sort of "closure." The best thing to do now is have Carl declared legally dead.

June 4, 1998

Dressed all in black, Victor Newman was surprised on this date when Sharon Newman told him the orphan kid (Cassie) is really her daughter! Victor was full of questions. Because "you are part of my family now I think I'm entitled to a few answers. Why have you been hiding this from me for so long?" Just then the orphan burst through the door. "I like you Mr. Newman. I hope we can be friends," Cassie said and then ran off.

Elsewhere, Ashley Abbott (The most boring woman in Genoa City) was reminding Cole Howard it won't be long until he's "a free man." Suddenly, Ashley became concerned about Victoria Newman. The poor child must be in such pain. "My heart goes out to her. Is there anyone who can get her through this? Maybe I can talk to her," Ashley said about the woman whose man she was stealing.

Victoria, feeling sorry for herself, walked into her office and found Neil Winters waiting. "I just wanted to see if you're holding up alright" Neil remarked. Victoria ran into his arms. She began to bawl. Woe is me. "I'm in love with you" she told him. Neil thought that was keen but until she tells Cole he's about to be a daddy they won't be able to move on. Outside the door, Ashley's ears turned red as she eavesdropped on the conversation.

Up on the 35th floor, Diane Jenkins couldn't believe her ears. She and Victor might not be legally divorced? "It is incredible" Diane said as Michael Baldwin explained that in his rush to dump the trash, Victor didn't have her sign any legal papers. When Baldwin left, Jack Abbott appeared to warn Diane to slow down any plan she has to soak Victor.

Baldwin returned to a horny Phyllis Summers at her apartment. She wanted to bang him on the spot but Baldwin was too wrapped up with a case. The only thing Phyllis got to stroke was his ego.

-----

On June 1, 1998, Jack Abbott told the deep in denial Diane Jenkins to accept the fact that Victor Newman had kicked her to the curb.

"The man is never coming back to you! The man dumped you! He treated you like dirt! You know what's worse? Watching you set yourself up for another fall with that bastard!" Abbott shouted as he walked out the door.

Although it was late at night, Jenkins zoomed to Newman's office.

"You said that you cared about me. I have to know where I stand in your life. I've got to know where I fit in or I swear, I'm going to lose my mind," she sniveled.

In other events this day: Neil Winters was shocked to hear that Victoria Newman was pregnant. "Are you sure?" he asked prompting Ms. Newman to bawl. She didn't know how she would handle being pregnant. Winters told her not to worry. He always stands by his women. "This child you're carrying. Let it be my child!" Winters fantasized.

At a nearby restaurant, Cole "Danger" Howard and the most boring woman in Genoa City were discussing his impending divorce from Ms. Newman. Elated, Ashley Abbott stuck her tongue between his lips before asking, "Are you serious?" Howard said yes and added, "I'm going to be a free man."

Out at the ranch, Sharon Newman, the baby and the orphan kid Cassie had returned to find Nick Newman waiting up. "Hi my little man," Nick sputtered to the baby as his wife went to put the child down. "I know you don't like me. I know you weren't expecting to have a step-daughter," Cassie snarled only to be told, "life is full of little surprises."

"Thanks for being so nice" Cassie said as she gave her future step-daddy a peck on the cheek which Mrs. Newman witnessed. A rush of hope swept over the woman. Could they really become "a family"?

Back in the big city, the Bug was sexed up. It's tiny milk jugs sagged under a blue negligee as she and detective Clueless called each other "soul mate" and sipped champagne. Clueless took his shirt off and pushed the Bug down onto the bed. The dirty deed done, they proclaimed their loyal devotion to each other.

At the apartment of Phyllis Summers, rock star Danny Romalotti was pleading. He wanted to take little Danny Jr. home with him but Summers said it was late and the kid was asleep. She could tell that things didn't go right with Romalotti's date with the Bug. Sure enough, Romalotti whined how the Bug had gone back to Clueless. Later, Summers told herself, "Maybe there's hope after all," that Romalotti would marry her.

Famous last words
"I am married to Nikki. I intend to stay married to Nikki. Not now, not tomorrow, not ever will I resume my relationship with Diane." -Victor Newman, May 29, 1998

-----

Nov 1998 - Alice Johnson learned that Sharon Collins was Cassie's birth mother. Snooping into Sharon's life, Alice discovered Sharon had married into a wealthy family. Nick returned home and tried apologizing but Sharon she wasn't forgiving. Angry, Nick fired Grace. Jack stepped in fearing Grace might file a sexual harassment suit against Newman Enterprises and arranged to have Grace transferred to another department.

Victor Newman asked Nick what was troubling him. Nick admitted that he was having marital troubles, but when Victor tried to help, Nick told him to stay out of it. Tony confronted Grace and got her to admit she had slept with Nick. Tony walked out on Grace. Grace consulted Michael Baldwin about a sexual harassment suit, but he said she didn't have a case.

Victor and Nikki learned that Sharon had separated from Nick because he was unfaithful with Grace. Nikki met with Grace and chastised her. Victor told his son to save his marriage.

Suffering from abdominal pains, Victoria Newman was hospitalized with a ruptured appendix. Her baby girl was also delivered by cesarean. Victoria learned her baby's health was in jeopardy. Later, Victoria confessed to Cole that she had deliberately gotten pregnant. While their baby struggled for her life, Victoria told Cole she wanted to name her Eve, after his mother. Victoria later learned from Cole their baby had died. Victoria and Cole held a memorial service for their baby. When Victoria was released from the hospital, Neil wanted her to come home with him. Instead, Victoria went to the ranch.

Brad Carlton met with Victor to discuss a job and Victor offered him a position that involved keeping an eye on Jack.

But Carl did't remember Paul so Paul told Jim that he was his son.

Dec 1998 - Victor put Jack and Brad in charge of Newman Enterprises. Jack arranged to have Grace become Brad's assistant. Tony confronted Nick and they got into a fight. At the coffee house, Grace tried to discourage Megan from seeing Tony. Megan and Tony enjoyed a close dance together. They then shared a kiss. Meanwhile, when Victor learned of Brad's personal interest in Diane, he encouraged Brad to pursue it.

Chris received information that Alice was living with a child molester. Chris advised Sharon not to pack her bags and leave the ranch. Meanwhile, Grace's mother told Alice that Grace was living in Genoa City. Alice made contact with Grace by phone and questioned her about Sharon. When Grace tried to warn Nick, he demanded she leave his office. Alice showed up at Grace's doorstep and explained that her mother Millie had given her daughter Cassie up for adoption by mistake. Grace told Alice she couldn't help her. Before leaving, Alice left her phone number. Grace went to the coffeehouse where Tony refused to help her, not realizing that Cassie was involved.

Sharon and Cassie stopped by the coffeehouse. When Grace tried to wish Cassie a Merry Christmas, Sharon forbid her to talk to the child. Sharon also added that Cassie deserved a better role model than Grace. After Sharon and Cassie left, Grace wondered if she should call Alice. Instead, she turned to Michael for advice. He said the friends of Sharon who brought Cassie to Genoa City could face criminal charges for taking the child away from her adopted mother. Alice called Grace and asked if she knew Millie. After Alice hung up, the phone rang and she answered. It was a call from Cassie asking to speak to Millie. When Sharon overheard the call, she quickly disconnected the line. Alice wondered if it was Cassie calling. Meanwhile, Nick told Sharon he loved her and their family.

Tricia was unnerved when Ryan suggested they bring Phillip along with them on their trip to Aspen but Ryan later changed his mind. Tricia made plans to keep her marriage on track by having a baby.

Paul was angry that Chris didn't tell him that she had tracked down his dad, Carl. Later, Chris and Paul showed up at "Jim" and Ruth's doorstep as they were preparing to leave town. Paul showed Carl some mementos, but Carl still didn't remember anything about his past life. Mary accepted Charlie's marriage proposal. She broke the news to Paul and Chris on Christmas Eve. Ruth became alarmed when "Jim" said he wanted to visit Genoa City to see if it might stir up any old memories. He arrived just in time to attend the Christmas service. Standing in the back of the church, he saw Paul with Mary and had a flashback to an earlier Christmas service he had spent with Mary and their young children. Terrified,  Carl ran out of the church. Later,, "Jim" and Ruth saw Mary and Paul at a diner and Carl had another flashback.

Callie learned that Malcolm saw Trey behind her back. Trey offered Callie a chance to perform as Aretha Franklin's opening act. Callie realized that Trey had placed several conditions on the offer, including getting back together with him. Malcolm and Olivia learned about Callie's job offer from Gina. Olivia thought it was a great idea. Callie lied and told Malcolm that she had accept Trey's offer. She gave Malcolm a goodbye kiss.

After moving back to Nikki's ranch, Victoria reassured Neil her decision didn't have anything to do with her feelings for him. Cole and Victoria provided comfort for each other as they grieved the death of their daughter. Ashley informed Cole that she had to rush to Europe on business. On Christmas Eve, Cole and Victoria shared a kiss. Later, Neil urged Cole to surprise Ashley in Europe for New Year's Eve.

Michael arranged a visit for Katherine with the court so that she could pick up her jewelry. When Jill found, she confronted Katherine, which upset Jill's lawyer, John Silva. Jill had a quiet conversation with Beatrice before she was scheduled to testify. When the court called Beatrice to testify, she wasn't in the courtroom. Katherine testified. She told the court she had given fifty percent of the Chancellor estate to Phillip. Jill ran into Beatrice at the courthouse where Beatrice explained she was nervous about testifying, and added it might help calm her nerves if Jill provided her with more money. Jill told Beatrice she'd come through with the money after Beatrice gave her testimony. When Beatrice was on the stand she testified that she was present when Katherine gave Phillip fifty percent of the Chancellor estate. When Michael asked if Beatrice had been paid by Jill for her testimony, Beatrice answered no. During a recess, Michael confronted Beatrice alone and said he had proof that she had committed perjury on the witness stand. Michael urged Beatrice to tell the truth in court, or risk being jailed for perjury. When the trial resumed, Beatrice admitted she had received money from Jill in exchange for her testimony. Jill accused Beatrice of lying and Beatrice flashed a photo copy of the check she had received from Jill. After closing arguments, the judge ruled that Jill and Katherine were co-owners of the Chancellor estate.
