The
Best & Worst of 2005 - Part 3
December 4, 2005
by Michael Kelly
Most Welcome Return - Susan Seaforth Hayes (JoAnna Manning)
Although JoAnna's far bitchier and bossier than she was 16 years ago (which
was the last time we saw her), it was quite a treat to see Lauren's mother
again. Susan Seaforth Hayes (JoAnna) is still very glamorous and it was
quite amusing to see JoAnna and Gloria take an instant dislike to one
another as they competed for complete control of Lauren's wedding.
Most Disappointing Performance - Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki)
Please don't get me wrong. I love Melody and she gave Emmy worthy
performances back in the late 1980's (when Nikki had to simultaneously
contend with both Victor's affair with Ashley and a thought to be fatal
disease) and early 1990's (during Nikki's dual addiction to booze and pain
medication).
Unfortunately, her attempt to realistically portray a sufferer of Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder was truly embarrassing. The truncated story line
may have been a dud, but Scott's amateur hour and unconvincing panic attacks
only made matters worse.
To be fair though, Scott threw one hell of a fit a few months ago following
a Newman dinner party when a hysterical and high as a kite Nikki let J.T.
have it for interfering in her life.
Biggest Laughing Stock - Victor Newman
While it's rather sad to see this once shrewd and omnipotent captain of
industry twiddling his thumbs in semi-retirement, perhaps Victor has his run
his course. In fact, he may have displayed unmistakable signs of senility by
hiring girly-boy imbeciles J.T. and Kevin to do anything more demanding than
mop the floors at NE.
Furthermore, his cringe-worthy Grambo and Ah-nuld routines when Victor
either physically overpowered mob bad-asses decades his junior or "Boop-ed"
while lifting weights at the Athletic Club have only succeeded in turning
this past his prime character into a joke.
Best Kiss - Brad Carlton and Sharon Newman
While their long-overdue but well worth the wait lip lock was preceded by an
absurd scene in which Sharon was rattled during her first live webcast by
obtuse and insensitive ninnies who took an unlikely interest in her dead
daughter, there's no denying she and Brad Carlton (who has no chemistry
whatsoever with Victoria) make an appealing and attractive pair.
I normally don't condone adultery but Nick and Sharon should have divorced
years ago. The scribes deserve credit for believably and slowly developing
the Newmans marital deterioration in the aftermath of Cassie's death and for
not pushing Nick and Sharon into the sack with Phyllis and Brad
respectively.
Most Boring Couple - J.T. Hellstrom and Mac Browning
Zzzzzzzzz....
Worst Exit - Bobby Marsino
I'm not going to dwell on how preposterous and poorly written the Vinny
Trabuco saga was. The former porn purveyor's attempts to extricate himself
from the mob should have been gripping television but no such luck.
Trabuco was far from the intimidating figure he should have been and Bobby's
off-screen demise was lazy and anti-climactic. John Enos (Bobby) deserved
better a better send-off. Particularly since the powers that be were upfront
in admitting Enos' firing was necessitated by budgetary restrictions.
Most Repulsive Woman - Brittany Marsino
Before her dead husband's body was cold, the skank practically begged J.T.
to bone her. Disgusting.
