Your Tired, Huddled Masses

Postscript: Technically, Lily and Devon moved out of
the Winters wooden box, but they spend so much time
there it's hard to tell sometimes.
Hopeful that today would bring something important
to write about, I.E.: the death of Victoria Newman
and her baby, when it became clear she won't die
today I thought okay, I'll just report on the other
important item of the day. But guess what? There
wasn't any other important news of the day. So
what's a poor GCN reporter guy to do? Look below the
surface. Right there, pull back the scum and what do
we have? Jumping Jesus! More of my favorite things.
Check that. Not actually my favorites, Karen
Taylor's and Dru Winters'. How do we know? For one,
Karen told us. She said today that Thanksgiving is
her "favorite holiday". The laid back day away from
the office, the good food, the good friends and
family, and did I mention the good food? Oink, oink,
Karen pigs out on Turkey Day. This year though,
Karen is slightly sad. That poor Newman girl,
Victoria. Comatose, pregnant and near death. Gosh,
does boyfriend Neil Winters think Victoria will be
in the hospital a mere week from now?
Probably not.
It's fairly common around these parts for sick
people, comatose people, to just wakeup one day and
walk out of the hospital good as new. You see, it
has a lot to do with miracles. In fact, as I type
this report, Nikki Newman is praying for one, or
two.
If he thought it would do any good, Neil would pray
too. He'd take his dead wife back in a heartbeat and
Karen knows it. So what does Karen do? She accepts
an invitation to celebrate Thanksgiving at the
Winters wooden box with his mangy kids. She jokes
that it'll be fun fighting with Devon Hamilton over
who gets the leg and absorbing the bad vides hurled
at her by Lily Winters, the newly divorced teenager
still living with her Pa who, while approving
daddy's request to invite Karen, is hesitant to do
so.
Karen knows the vibes all too well. She was right
there at the office today when the kiddies from Hell
brought daddy a meal from the local landfill.
"Dinner with the family", Neil called it. Oh how he
thinks that this year the family should eat out,
until Lily snipes that getting them out of the
apartment won't soon make them forget the
unforgettable Dru and howz about we invite Sharon
Abbott?
"Why, that's a wonderful idea! Why didn't I think of
that?" the moronic Neil didn't actually say, nor did
he remind Lily that Sharon has her own stinky family
to celebrate with. Why would she want to eat with
them... unless, you think if they try real hard they
can turn the day into a memorial service for Dru?
You think a day goes by that they can't take a crap
without thinking about Dru?
And so it came to pass that because Neil knows that
Karen's favorite meal/food is Italian, and that her
favorite ice cream is praline surprise, Karen
started thinking about what she could bring to give
the meal a woman's touch and came up with her
personal "favorite Filipino dish" chicken adobo. And
damn but wouldn't you know, that's what Lily was
planning to make; it was one of Dru's specialties.
Sorry Karen, you suck the big teat if you think
you'll bring anything that Dru liked because Lily's
got all Dru's recipes, she does.
Not that Lily can boil water, or ever once cooked a
homemade meal for her ex-husband, when Karen's
around all rights to anything Dru are Lily's.
Besides, didn't Neil say Karen's favorite food is
Italian? What the hell is she doing cooking Filipino
dung? To go with the Jalapeño corn bread Devon's
gonna bake? The idea of strangers in her daddy's
home gives Lily the creeps. Oops, how could she not
know - as Devon does - that Dru was the peacemaker.
Come, dear strangers; give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses. Let's break bread!
The
Long Hours

Oh my
god, first day at her plush job and Karen Taylor is bitching about
the long hours? What did she think? That she could just show up for
work and then go running personal errands? Who does she think she
is? Dru Winters, or any number of executives who find time to go on
personal trips looking for their missing children? When Karen was
told she'd be having meetings with department heads did she think
those heads were figments of Victor Newman's imagination? Does Karen
think in a day or two someone won't notice she's not qualified to do
much more that scrub toilets or the department heads giving her the
stink eye 'cause they've been waiting in line for the next slacker
job?
When Neil started whining about her job performance couldn't Karen
see the three-ring circus had begun? She didn't notice there are two
companies being run out of Newman Towers including the boss' wife
defunct political campaign? Before she snapped the job up, Karen
didn't check the place out? Didn't she notice the sperm stains in
the overcrowded breakroom? Didn't she check with her former boss to
see what working with the great man is like? Nikki Newman could have
bent her ear clean off.
NVP, Nikki's baby, a concept of health spas built from the ground up
thanks to Newman money and literally overnight became multinational,
now earns buku bucks for the empire. It was stolen from Nikki by her
own husband and given to former hubby Jack Abbott. Victor said he
wanted to use it to take nemesis Jack down but never accomplished
the goal beyond getting NVP back only to take it away from Nikki
again. Now, like so many years ago, just because Victor witnessed
her swapping spit with David Chow, he wants Nikki penniless. Of
course Nikki couldn't tell Karen about this because she doesn't
exactly spend every waking moment at the office.
Take today for example. Upset that Victor is using NVP to control
her, Nikki ran straight into Chow's arms to ask that he stick around
Genoa City. Chow could always say he wasn't staying for her sake so
much as he was to attend Jana Hawkes' criminal trial except that
Chow said he can't go to no stinking trial because it would remind
him of how much he misses Hawkes' victim, his lover, Carmen Mesta.
Not what she wanted to hear, Nikki didn't mention to Chow that it's
not like he thinks of Mesta day and night. He pretty much forgot
about her once members of the Winters clan had been cleared of
suspicion and months following Hawkes confession never once asked
the cops why they weren't looking for Mesta's killer nor did he
offer to help Kevin Fisher take Hawkes down.
As for
believing Hawkes will be found guilty at trial and sent to prison,
it's obvious Chow hasn't been around Genoa City very long. Things
have changed since the police could simply lock suspects up in
padded gulags, question them without lawyers present, allow biased
private investigators to question them and then have suspects vanish
into thin air. Rumor has it that's what happened to Izzy Brana
following her arrest for attempting to kill a creepy bug. At least
Hawkes will reportedly get a trial.
And if Chow doesn't think Hawkes' will get off - think again.
Diagnosed with a brain tumor, if Hawkes can find a good public
defender in this short of lawyers city, she's got the perfect alibi;
she was out of her head at the time just like Karen if she thinks
the hours are long.
