When Cassie Newman came down from Heaven on May 24, 2006, I penned my thoughts here and it was arguably the worst day in Genoa City history, but with today being New Year's and there being no other news, I thought it might be interesting to compare what was happening then, to what's happening now and see if it's really true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Then - Nick Newman blames himself for letting a barely thirteen Cassie go to a party in the park when Cassie had already made up her stubborn mind she was going no matter what.

Now - Noah Newman goes out into a blizzard, bums a ride to the Newman Ponderosa, and all Nick said was that what Noah did wasn't too smart. For all the scolding Nick didn't do, the potential of Noah being killed by his action did not enter Nick's thick head. He did not recall that it had been just 18 months ago that Cassie went out when she wasn't supposed to and died because of it. Of course, it wasn't snowing the night Cassie went out. In fact, during the entire week of Christmas, I can't recall that Nick spoke of Cassie's demise at all, but was able to tell Noah that as a boy he was known as the "snow wizard".

Then - Seeing in his idiotic mind's eye Daniel Romalotti peering into Cassie's hospital room, Nick and his then bonehead wife, wait, Sharon is still a bonehead, they threw a hissy fit screaming for Daniel to get out.

Now - Nick is Daniel's step-dad! They are best buds. All has been forgiven and no matter how many times Daniel went to and from the Ponderosa last week there was no mention of Cassie. Daniel did not kneel before Cassie's Jitter Joint shrine because it has, apparently, long since been removed which may explain why Noah and Company didn't pay homage to Cassie this year either.

Then - Victor Newman visited his granddaughter at the hospital. He called Cassie "my sweetheart", a term usually reserved for his biological daughter, the now comatose Victoria Newman.

Now - The name Cassie has not passed Victor's lips. Dead is dead. He has a new, very much alive grandson to take Cassie's place.

Then - At Cassie's funeral, Nick again blames himself as Sharon says they share the blame for letting Cassie go out that night.

Now - Unless I missed it, Sharon did not mention Cassie last week. She spoke of the dead Dru Winters, donated money to one of Dru's favorite charities, but did not, while trimming the Abbott Christmas tree, haul out Cassie's favorite ornament and you know Cassie had one. You don't?

December 20, 2005

It was learned this week that in addition to her many favorite holidays, and horses and sports and condoms, the dearly departed Cassie Newman had a favorite Christmas tree ornament! Similar to the one that went missing from the Abbott Hotel tree last year, the one with the words 'Ashley's first Christmas' on it, Newman's half-brother, Noah said Tuesday he can vividly recall the time last year when Cassie personally put the ornament on the tree with her very own hand. "She was a good sister," Noah sniveled during a tree-lighting ceremony at the Newman Ponderosa Outhouse with his sex-starved mother Sharon and adulterous father Nick. "That memory of Cassie is so special," Mrs. Newman confirmed as Mr. Newman continually referred to Noah as "Bud"

In fact, from what we saw, Sharon didn't trim the tree at all, nor Jack Abbott or Noah who it was said was going out to chop a tree down.

Then - Accused of driving the car Cassie was actually operating and crashed into a power pole, on the run from the law and with minor Lily Winters with him, Daniel is tracked down on a California beach by Nick who starts beating the snot out of him.

Now - Nick and Daniel are like father and son.

Then - Phyllis Summers Abbott, committing computer crimes, accuses Nick of concealing evidence that proves Daniel wasn't driving that night. The evidence, found under the gas peddle by Genoa City's most clueless PI Paul Williams after a CI team had gone over the vehicle with a fine-toothed comb and found nothing, is eventually turned over to authorities and Nick was not charged with a crime.

Now - Recently released from prison after being found guilty of blackmailing Brad Carlton, a blackmailing that did not happen, Phyllis has practically forgotten she was in prison. On New Year's Eve, she travels alone to the big city ordering takeout from two different - but always open holidays - establishments having apparently forgotten too that her now husband Nick so badly wanted her son behind bars he concealed evidence.

Then - Sharon learns that Nick slept with another woman. Nick pleads with her not to let his adultery destroy them.

Now - Nick can't do enough to keep Sharon in Jack's bed. Jack is like the father Nick says he never had and don't all good sons want their fathers to be having sex with their used up wives? Note too that while his son claims another man as his best of dads, Victor does not seem to know about Nick's feelings for Jack. All this while an acting very much like Victor, Nick requests that Phyllis kick his ass if he should ever act like Victor. Acting like Jack, run out of the State Senate in disgrace, would be okay.

Then - Like Cassie did before him, Noah takes over the role of family whiner. His family is never going to be together again; not like a real family.

Now - Noah's still whining. Living with Jack and his mother sucks big time; they're always fighting; mommy isn't happy. Nick's solution? Adults do these things so Noah should learn to live with it.

Then - Nick tells Cassie he was living a dream; it was like he couldn't wake up.
Now - Nick is still living a dream; it's his sister who can't wake up.

Then - Cassie informs Nick that Daniel and Lily are married; they are happy.
Now - Daniel and Lily are divorced; Lily is miserable. Daniel lives a miserable existence.

Then - Daniel graduates from high school. Phyllis hopes he'll be named prom king.
Now - Daniel is the king - of pornography.

Then - Nick tells Cassie he can't imagine life without her.
Now - Nick is doing just fine without Cassie. He's barely had two thought about Cassie since.

Then - Nick notes that Dru and Neil Winters "used to be such a close family."
Now - Neil can barely recall a time he and Dru weren't close.

Then - Cassie tells Nick that Lily and Daniel were "meant to be together."
Now - Oops. Guess not.

Then - Sharon grumbles; she can count on one hand how many times Nick has put the pork to her.
Now - Sharon doesn't have enough hands to count the times she's had sex (in her mind) with Brad Carlton.

Then - Cassie says she never imagined that her "parents" would be so troubled.
Now - It doesn't matter now, but there was time Cassie couldn't imagine having parents. Sharon dumped her as a baby; her only friend a rag doll, Cassie lived with an old lady named Millie Johnson who couldn't be bothered to attend Cassie's funeral on May 31, 2005. In fact, few people went to the funeral not counting Cassie's doll, Cindy. True story, they hauled Cindy out of storage and Noah put the doll atop the casket!

Then - Cassie foretold the story of how Nick and Sharon would have another baby girl.
Now - Cassie got it part right. Nick has another daughter, but Sharon doesn't and for that we should thank the soap gods.
