I'm beginning to believe that TPTB at Bell Productions and CBS may be intent upon performing a Dr. Kevorkian type killing of Y&R. So many things are wrong with the writing that it would take several pages to describe the problems in detail. When I began writing for GCNews, Jack Smith was intent on portraying incest or at least keeping the theme in storylines.

At the time, viewers, GCN readers and I were outraged and rightly so. Once I'd heard that Smith was flushed away to the unemployment line, I thought the incest mindset would be in the past. Not long ago, it popped up again. I've been trying to give the writers the benefit of the doubt in the sense of fairness, but it's just the same old crap. The only difference is that other people are taking the place of Smith and Kay All-Done.

One extremely astute person posting at the Genoa City News bulletin board made the following comment: "Sometimes I think CBS and Sony want out of the soap business and to avoid the outcry that would result from canceling the show they're doing their damndest to slowly drive viewers away." Think about it, this makes sense.

Otherwise, why would these idiotic scribes prepare insipid dialog for teen characters that the majority of viewers couldn't care less about? More than once, I've read or heard people's complaints about the show catering to the teenage characters in Genoa City. TPTB need to wake up and realize that tales of sparkling vampires are more appealing to a large number of their targeted audience as opposed to watching the antics of the semi-talented young actors and actresses on Y&R.

When this program began, it did not cater to kids and it developed a solid fan base because of well-written, emotionally gripping stories and dialog. Devoting large amounts of time to teens probably would have been dismissed as a silly idea and bad for business. Of course, more women were at home then but times have changed. Still, that is no excuse to compromise on quality writing.

Certainly some influential person with either Bell Productions or CBS has walked away from the sycophants long enough to see some genuine feedback from viewers. I would like to think that TPTB still care about what viewers say and want, but I'm not so sure. It would be all too easy for Bell Productions to concentrate solely on "The Bold and the Beautiful" while CBS filled the time slot previously occupied by Y&R with another god-awful reality show. Some of the suits could reassure themselves that soap operas were merely the Edsels of Daytime TV and that it was time to send these old clunkers to the junkyard.

If the suits really gave a damn about Y&R they would take the time to read comments from actual viewers, not some praise gushing pod people who say what the executives want to hear. GCN readers have already voiced opinions about ditching the teens. One reader, Antiquefan, asked, "Why aren't TPTB smart enough to listen to most of us? They need to recapture the essence of the 80s and early 90s and run with it."

Perhaps the writers and executives are refusing to listen to fan feedback because they are simply following orders from the suits. If their mission is intended to destroy this long-running daytime drama, they're doing a damned good job.
